A Heart of Loyalty

2 min read

If you’re a fan of Katsuya Jounouchi from Yu-Gi-Oh!, there’s a good chance you’re drawn to characters who wear their hearts on their sleeves — and sometimes throw in a punchline while they're at it. Jounouchi, with his loyalty, humor, and occasional brashness, is the kind of character who wins you over not through polish, but through sincerity. If that’s your jam, then you might find a surprising kindred spirit in Sans from Undertale.

At first glance, the two couldn’t seem more different — one’s a scrappy duelist from Domino City, the other a slacker skeleton in a world of monsters. But beneath their quirky exteriors and bone-based puns (okay, mostly Sans), they share more than you might expect.

A Heart of Loyalty

Jounouchi’s loyalty to his friends is legendary. He’d throw down for Yugi or Honda without a second thought, even when it meant putting himself in harm’s way. His actions speak louder than words — like when he jumps in to protect his friends during a duel, even if he doesn’t always have the cards to back it up.

Sans, too, has that same quiet loyalty. He might sleep on the job and make terrible puns, but when push comes to shove, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect those he cares about. Whether it’s guiding you through the Underground or stepping up in a moment of crisis, his actions reveal a deep sense of responsibility — not unlike Jounouchi’s.

Humor as Armor

Both characters use humor as a shield. Jounouchi deflects his insecurities with bravado and jokes, especially early in the series. It’s a way to keep people at arm’s length until they prove they’re worth trusting.

Sans takes this to another level with his ever-present smirk and endless puns. On the surface, it’s just goofy fun — but dig a little deeper, and you realize it’s a defense mechanism. His humor hides a complex past and a burden that few others carry. If you appreciate how Jounouchi uses laughter to mask his vulnerability, Sans will feel like a familiar friend.

Underestimated Strength

Jounouchi is often seen as the underdog, someone who doesn’t have the flashiest cards or the most strategic mind. But time and again, he proves that heart can outmatch raw power. His duel with Bandit Keith is a perfect example — not the most elegant, but full of grit and determination.

Sans, too, is underestimated — by everyone, including the player. He seems like comic relief at first, but when the moment calls for it, he reveals a terrifying level of power. It’s not about flashy moves or loud declarations; it’s about knowing when to act and how to protect what matters.

Flaws That Make Them Real

Neither of these characters are perfect, and that’s part of what makes them so relatable. Jounouchi can be impulsive, stubborn, and occasionally reckless. But those flaws make him human — and his growth over time is one of the most rewarding parts of his story.

Sans, likewise, has his own shadows. He carries the weight of past choices, and while he plays it off with jokes, there’s a sadness to him that never fully goes away. Fans of Jounouchi who appreciate his emotional journey will find a lot to connect with in Sans.

Quiet Heroes

Both Jounouchi and Sans are heroes in their own way — not because they seek glory, but because they do what’s right when it matters most. They don’t need recognition, and they often step back so others can shine. But when the world needs someone with heart, they’re the ones you want by your side.

If you’ve ever rooted for Jounouchi because he fights with his heart more than his head, you’ll find a lot to love in Sans. Want to see what makes him tick? On HoloDream, he’ll tell you all about his brother, his job, and why he always takes the easy route — unless you give him a reason not to.
