It can summarize what has been written so far when a draft has gone long enough that the writer has lost the thread. It can generate placeholder prose for a section whose content is clear but whose phrasing is elusive, freeing the writer to handle the important sections first. Those decisions belong to the writer, and the blank page that comes from not having made them yet cannot be filled by delegating the making to a language model.

It is a different activity dressed in similar clothes. Writers who use it to avoid the blank page entirely tend to describe something emptier. The blank page is unpleasant. It is also where writing begins. The goal is not to eliminate it but to pass through it faster and with less suffering.
