AI for Writers: When the Page Is Blank and So Is Your Head

2 min read

The Blank Page as a Specific Problem

Writer's block is not a single experience. The phrase covers a range of states with different causes and different appropriate responses. The blank page that follows finishing a major project is different from the blank page that arrives mid-draft, which is different from the blank page that means you do not know what you are trying to say yet. AI is more useful for some of these than others, and knowing which one you are dealing with changes how to use it.

When Nothing Comes Out

The most common form of blank page experience is not a lack of ideas but a failure of the filtering mechanism — too many ideas arrive and are dismissed before they reach the page, because the internal critic is running faster than the generative process. This is a momentum problem more than a content problem. AI is moderately useful here as a pressure release. Asking an AI to generate ten possible openings for a piece you are trying to write is not about using what it produces. It is about watching bad options exist on the page and discovering, in reaction to them, what you actually want. The resistance to what the AI generates is itself information.

When You Do Not Know What You Are Saying

A different and more fundamental version of the blank page means you do not yet have a clear idea of what you are trying to communicate. No first sentence will fix this problem because the problem is upstream of sentences. This is the situation where AI can actually be more useful as a thinking partner than as a generator. Research from the University of Toronto on writing and cognition found that the act of writing to discover — using writing as a tool for thinking rather than recording finished thought — produced significantly different cognitive outcomes than writing to express already-formed ideas. AI dialogue can serve a similar function: not to produce content but to help the writer find out what they think through the act of articulating it badly first.

Tangent: Hemingway's Practical Rule

Ernest Hemingway reportedly stopped writing each day mid-sentence so he always had a way back in the next morning. The rule was not about inspiration. It was about the neurological reality that returning to something already in motion requires less activation energy than starting cold. The most common writing advice — write every day, keep the habit — is, at its core, about managing activation energy rather than waiting for conditions to be ideal.

What AI Does Well for Writers

AI is genuinely useful for the mechanics of getting unstuck without consuming the creative decisions that define the work. It can produce a rough outline when the structure is unclear, allowing the writer to argue with it and discover their actual structure in the process. It can summarize what has been written so far when a draft has gone long enough that the writer has lost the thread. It can generate placeholder prose for a section whose content is clear but whose phrasing is elusive, freeing the writer to handle the important sections first. What AI cannot do is decide what the piece is about or why it matters. Those decisions belong to the writer, and the blank page that comes from not having made them yet cannot be filled by delegating the making to a language model.

The Risk of Outsourcing Too Much

There is a version of AI-assisted writing that bypasses the difficulty of writing rather than addressing it. Generating a full draft from a brief prompt and then editing it is not writing in the sense that produces writing skill, distinct voice, or the particular satisfaction of having made something. It is a different activity dressed in similar clothes. Writers who use AI as a genuine thinking tool — a way to generate reaction, test ideas, find structure, and maintain momentum — tend to describe it as expanding their practice. Writers who use it to avoid the blank page entirely tend to describe something emptier. The blank page is unpleasant. It is also where writing begins. The goal is not to eliminate it but to pass through it faster and with less suffering.
