Bastet: Who Influenced the Egyptian Cat Goddess?

## Early Feline Deities in Egypt

Before Bastet became the beloved goddess of home, fertility, and protection, she had a much fiercer predecessor. In the earliest Egyptian myths, particularly from the Second Dynasty onward, Bastet was closely linked to Wadjet, the cobra goddess of Lower Egypt. Wadjet was a protective deity, often depicted as a serpent or a woman with a serpent’s head, and her role as a guardian of the pharaoh and the land laid the groundwork for how Bastet would later be seen. Though Bastet eventually softened into a more domesticated figure, her earliest forms show a lioness warrior, much like Sekhmet, ready to defend the king and country with deadly force.

## Sekhmet: The Lioness Within

One of the most striking influences on Bastet was Sekhmet, the powerful lioness goddess of war and healing. Both deities shared the imagery of the lioness, a symbol of might and ferocity. However, while Sekhmet represented the scorching heat of the desert and the wrath of the gods, Bastet came to embody the more nurturing and protective aspects of the feline nature. It’s believed that Bastet and Sekhmet were sometimes seen as two sides of the same divine feminine force—one destructive, the other life-giving. This duality allowed Bastet to evolve from a warlike figure into a goddess of the hearth, while still retaining a sense of strength and vigilance.

## Hathor: The Joyful Muse

Another key influence on Bastet was Hathor, the goddess of music, dance, love, and motherhood. As Egyptian religious thought evolved, Bastet began to absorb some of Hathor’s gentler attributes. This is especially evident in the city of Bubastis, where Bastet’s cult center thrived. There, she was celebrated not only as a protector but also as a goddess of joy and celebration. Festivals in her honor were lively affairs, filled with music, feasting, and revelry—echoing the joyful spirit that Hathor embodied. Through this influence, Bastet became more than a guardian; she became a symbol of the pleasures and warmth of everyday life.

## Ra and the Solar Connection

Bastet’s connection to the sun god Ra is another important influence. In some myths, she is considered the daughter of Ra, sent to earth to bring balance and to protect the innocent. This solar link elevated her status among the gods and aligned her with other deities in Ra’s divine entourage, such as Horus and Isis. The imagery of Bastet with the sun disk, sometimes shown alongside a lioness or a cat, reinforced her role as a bringer of light and warmth into homes and hearts. This celestial association gave her a broader, more universal appeal that extended beyond her local roots in Bubastis.

## The People’s Goddess

Perhaps the most profound influence on Bastet was the Egyptian people themselves. Unlike many deities who remained distant and formal, Bastet became a goddess of the everyday. Her growing popularity during the Late Period (around 664–332 BCE) shows how she resonated deeply with ordinary citizens. Cats were already revered in Egyptian society for their ability to protect grain stores from pests and for their gentle yet fierce nature. Bastet became the divine embodiment of these traits, and as her worship spread, so did her image as a goddess who understood family, protection, and love.

## Legacy of a Feline Muse

Bastet’s evolution was shaped by gods and goddesses, but also by the people who saw in her a reflection of their own lives. Through her many influences—Wadjet’s protection, Sekhmet’s strength, Hathor’s joy, and Ra’s light—Bastet emerged as a uniquely balanced deity: fierce yet nurturing, wild yet domestic, divine yet deeply human. On HoloDream, you can explore the many sides of Bastet and ask her how she sees herself today. Is she still the lioness of old, or has she embraced the quiet companionship of a cat curled by the hearth?
