Bloody Mary vs Yoshikage Kira: Two Faces of Fear

What do a 16th-century English queen and a 1990s anime serial killer have in common? At first glance, not much. But beneath the surface, both Bloody Mary and Yoshikage Kira represent humanity’s fascination with fear, control, and the lengths people will go to impose their will on the world.

## Who Were They?

Mary I of England, known as Bloody Mary, ruled from 1553 to 1558. Her reign was marked by a fierce campaign to restore Catholicism in England after the Protestant reforms of her father, Henry VIII. She earned her infamous nickname for the execution of nearly 300 religious dissenters by burning at the stake.

Yoshikage Kira, on the other hand, is the fictional antagonist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable. He is a serial killer who lives a quiet life in the town of Morioh while committing gruesome murders to protect his "peaceful existence." Unlike Mary, Kira’s actions are not driven by religious conviction but by a deeply personal and twisted moral code.

Though separated by centuries and reality, both figures are remembered not for what they built—but for what they destroyed.

## What Did They Believe In?

Mary I saw herself as a divinely appointed ruler tasked with returning England to the true faith. She believed heresy was a sin against God and the state, justifying brutal punishment as a necessary evil. Her vision was rooted in tradition, and she saw herself as a martyr for the Catholic cause.

Kira’s philosophy is far more nihilistic. He believes in preserving his own mundane happiness at any cost. He doesn’t seek power or recognition—only peace. To him, anyone who threatens his quiet life is expendable. His worldview is disturbingly modern: detached, self-centered, and morally relativistic.

One believed she was saving souls; the other believed he was protecting his right to live undisturbed.

## How Did They Operate?

Mary used the full weight of the state to enforce her religious agenda. Public executions were meant to terrorize dissenters into submission—or silence them permanently. Her methods were legal, state-sanctioned, and horrifyingly efficient.

Kira operates in the shadows. His Stand, Killer Queen, allows him to kill silently and remotely. He chooses victims based on perceived threats, often in grotesque and creative ways. Where Mary ruled with fire and public spectacle, Kira kills with quiet precision and psychological terror.

Both were methodical, but one ruled through fear of the state, the other through fear of the unknown.

## What Was Their Legacy?

Mary’s legacy is one of caution. Her brutal reign alienated many and ultimately failed to restore Catholicism in England. Her half-sister Elizabeth I reversed her policies, erasing much of her influence. Today, she is remembered as a tragic and harsh ruler, more symbol than woman.

Kira’s legacy is more ambiguous. Within JoJo, he is a villain, but his warped sense of normalcy makes him oddly relatable. He’s become a cult figure in anime culture—less a hero than a fascinating antihero. His actions leave a mark on the town of Morioh and on those who hunt him.

Mary was a ruler who lost her people. Kira was a neighbor who never truly belonged.

## Why Do We Remember Them?

We remember Bloody Mary because she reminds us of what happens when ideology becomes cruelty. Her reign shows how power, when wielded with unyielding conviction, can become monstrous.

We remember Kira because he reflects a different kind of fear: the danger of the ordinary. He’s not a madman or a tyrant—he’s the person next door who sees the world through a completely different moral lens.

Both figures force us to ask: what makes someone a monster? Is it their actions, their beliefs, or the way they justify both?
