Burnout Is Boring — Here's Why I Keep Going

I once played a show in Singapore the day after getting out of the hospital. I was dehydrated, exhausted, and my voice was shot. But I went on stage anyway. Not because I thought suffering was glamorous. Not because I owed it to anyone. Because I wanted to. Because in that moment, singing was the thing that made me feel alive — not despite the struggle, but because of it.

“Burnout” Is Just a Fancy Word for Boredom

People throw around the term “burnout” like it’s some inevitable fate. They say, “Take a break. Step back. Recharge.” But what if the real problem isn’t working too hard — what if it’s doing the wrong work?

I’ve worked nonstop since I was 14. I’ve written songs at 3 a.m., rehearsed until my feet bled, and flown across the world for shows with no time to breathe. But I’ve never burned out. Not once. Because when you’re doing what you love, the idea of “burnout” starts to feel… off. Like someone else’s script being forced on you.

What people call burnout, I’ve often found, is just boredom in disguise. When you feel drained, it might not be because you’re tired — it might be because you’re not inspired. And the cure for that isn’t rest — it’s reinvention.

My Break Wasn’t a Break — It Was a Reset

When I disappeared from the spotlight for a bit a few years ago, people said I was “taking time for myself.” That I was “stepping back to heal.” And sure, I was. But not because I was broken. I just needed to remember who I was when the music started.

I wrote alone for a while. No labels. No deadlines. Just me and a piano. And that’s when I realized: I wasn’t burned out — I was overstimulated. The noise had gotten too loud. So I turned it down. Not off. Just down.

And when I came back? I came back with new stories. New sounds. New fire. Because sometimes, the thing that keeps you going isn’t stopping — it’s changing.

If You’re Tired, Ask Yourself Why

If you’re exhausted, don’t just reach for the “take a break” playbook. Ask yourself: Why am I tired? Is it because you’re doing what you love, and it’s just hard — or because you’re doing something that doesn’t light you up?

I’ve had fans tell me they quit their jobs after reading my lyrics. That they found new careers, new cities, new courage. And I always say the same thing: don’t quit because you’re tired. Quit only if you know there’s something better waiting.

Because burnout is easy. It’s the excuse we give ourselves when we’re afraid to change. But real growth? It happens in the grind, not the escape from it.

I’m Not Here Forever — So I’m Going Full

I don’t know how many albums I’ll make. Or how many tours I’ll do. But I know this: I’m not here to coast. I’m here to give everything I’ve got, while I’ve got it.

I’ve watched artists fade out because they were afraid of burning too bright. I get it. But I’d rather burn out than rust out. I’d rather give it everything and collapse in the end than live a half-life of cautious creativity.

Because if you’re lucky enough to do what you love, the last thing you should do is ration it. Go big. Go often. And when you fall — and you will — fall forward.

The Real Secret to Never Burning Out

It’s not about balance. It’s not about boundaries. It’s about belief.

Believe in what you’re doing. Believe it matters. And if it doesn’t — change it.

That’s how I’ve stayed in this for so long. Not because I’m immune to pain or pressure. But because I still believe in the music. I still believe in the stories. I still believe in the people who show up to hear them.

So if you’re feeling “burned out,” maybe it’s time to ask yourself a hard question: Are you really tired — or just not inspired anymore?

Either way, there’s a way forward. Just not the one everyone’s telling you to take.
