Captain Picard Chose Diplomacy in a Universe That Kept Offering Him War

In The Inner Light, Picard lives an entire lifetime in twenty-five minutes. A probe from a dead civilization implants memories of a life he never lived: a wife, children, a community, a world that died a thousand years ago. When he wakes up, the only artifact from that life is a flute. He plays it for the rest of the series, alone in his quarters, mourning people who never existed except inside his mind.
