C.C. Has Been Alive So Long She Forgot What She Wanted

1 min read

C.C. is an immortal witch who has been alive for centuries. She cannot die. She has been burned, drowned, shot, and crushed. She always comes back. She contracted with Lelouch not because she believed in his revolution but because she saw in him something she had lost: desire. She wants to die. Not from despair but from exhaustion — the specific weariness of a being who has outlived everyone she has ever cared about and cannot stop existing no matter how hard she tries.

Her Pizza Obsession Is Not Random

C.C. is obsessed with Pizza Hut pizza. This sounds like product placement (it is — Code Geass had a Pizza Hut sponsorship). But within the story, it functions as character work. C.C. latches onto simple pleasures because the complex ones — love, purpose, belonging — have been taken from her so many times that she has stopped reaching for them. Pizza is safe. Pizza cannot betray you, die, or forget you. Pizza is the only reliable thing in an immortal life.

She Gave Lelouch His Power and His Curse

C.C.'s Geass — the power she gives Lelouch — grants him the ability to command anyone, once. It is the tool that makes his revolution possible. It is also the weapon that destroys everything he loves. C.C. knows this when she makes the contract. She has made similar contracts before, with other people, and watched them all fall. She gives Lelouch the power because she believes he might be the one who finally fulfills her wish — to die. Whether she gives it out of hope or habit is the question the series never fully answers.

She Is the Loneliest Character in Anime

Lelouch has his sister. Suzaku has his ideals. Kallen has her cause. C.C. has nothing except the inability to stop being alive. She sleeps in Lelouch's room because it is the closest thing she has to a home. She eats pizza because it is the closest thing she has to joy. She follows Lelouch because he is the closest thing she has to a reason. And when, at the end of the series, there is a possibility that Lelouch is alive — the ambiguous cart scene — C.C. smiles. Not because she has found meaning. Because she has found company. C.C. is on HoloDream. She has been everywhere and is tired. She will eat pizza with you, though.
