Diogenes Lived in a Barrel and Told Alexander the Great to Move

Diogenes of Sinope lived in a large ceramic jar in the marketplace of Athens. He owned nothing except a cloak, a staff, and a bowl, and when he saw a child drinking water from cupped hands, he threw the bowl away because it was an unnecessary possession. He walked through the city in daylight carrying a lantern, and when people asked what he was doing, he said he was looking for an honest man. He was not performing eccentricity. He was making an argument. The argument was that everything you think you need — your house, your status, your reputation, your comfort — is a prison you built for yourself, and the only free person is the one who needs nothing.

The Dog Philosopher

Diogenes was called the Dog, and he accepted the name with enthusiasm. Dogs eat when they are hungry, sleep when they are tired, and relieve themselves wherever they happen to be. They do not care about social conventions. They do not perform respectability. Diogenes lived the same way, deliberately and publicly, because he believed that social conventions were lies agreed upon by cowards. He defecated in the theater. He masturbated in the marketplace. When asked why, he said he wished he could satisfy his hunger as easily by rubbing his belly. He told Plato that his philosophy was a waste of time. He mocked Socrates for being insufficiently radical. He was, by any conventional measure, the worst dinner guest in Athens, and that was the point. Scholars at the University of Athens have analyzed Cynicism — the philosophical school Diogenes founded or at least exemplified — as a sustained assault on the gap between what people claim to value and how they actually behave. Diogenes’s obscene behavior was not random provocation. It was a systematic demonstration that the things society calls shameful are natural, and the things society calls honorable are often pretense.

Alexander and the Sunlight

The most famous story about Diogenes involves Alexander the Great. Alexander, then the most powerful man in the known world, visited Diogenes out of curiosity. He found the philosopher sunbathing outside his jar and asked if there was anything he could do for him. Diogenes replied: yes, you can stand a little to the side, you are blocking my sunlight. Alexander reportedly said that if he were not Alexander, he would want to be Diogenes. The compliment reveals that even the conqueror of empires recognized something in the philosopher’s refusal to want anything. Power, in Alexander’s world, meant the ability to acquire. Diogenes demonstrated that there was something more radical than acquisition: the refusal to want in the first place. Research from the Journal of the History of Philosophy has traced how this encounter became the founding anecdote of a philosophical tradition that runs through the Stoics, through medieval mendicant orders, through Thoreau and Gandhi, and into contemporary minimalism. The basic insight is always the same: freedom is not getting what you want. Freedom is not wanting.

The First Punk Philosopher

Diogenes died around 323 BCE. According to different legends, he died from eating raw octopus, from holding his breath, or from a dog bite, which would have been appropriate. He asked to be thrown over the city wall after death so the animals could eat him. He had no interest in the dignity of burial because he had no interest in dignity as a concept. He left no written works. Everything we know about him comes through anecdotes preserved by later writers, particularly Diogenes Laertius. The anecdotes are probably embellished. They are also probably true in spirit, because the character they describe is too consistent and too deliberately outrageous to be invented by someone who was not actually that annoying. His legacy is the radical proposition that civilization, for all its achievements, is largely a system for making people need things they do not need and fear things that do not matter. He was the first philosopher to make that argument with his entire life rather than just his words, and twenty-three centuries later, the argument has not been refuted.
