Dory vs Captain Ahab: Two Swimmers in the Vast Sea of Obsession

There’s something eerily similar about a forgetful blue tang and a vengeful sea captain. On the surface, Finding Nemo’s Dory and Moby-Dick’s Captain Ahab couldn’t seem more different. One is a brightly colored fish with short-term memory loss; the other is a brooding, peg-legged man hunting a white whale across oceans. But dig beneath the surface, and both are propelled by obsession, persistence, and a kind of blind faith in their quest.

Let’s take a closer look at these two iconic characters, not as cartoon and classic literature, but as symbols of determination and the cost of single-mindedness.

## What Drives Their Obsession?

Dory’s drive is pure and instinctive. She doesn’t remember why she’s helping Marlin find Nemo, but she feels it’s the right thing to do. Her memory may be broken, but her heart is whole. Ahab, on the other hand, is driven by vengeance. Moby Dick took his leg, and now Ahab will stop at nothing to destroy the whale. His obsession is rooted in pride and pain. Both characters are propelled by forces beyond logic, but Dory’s is innocent, while Ahab’s is destructive.

## How Do They Approach Their Goals?

Dory moves through the ocean like a current—unpredictable, chaotic, yet somehow always in motion. She forgets her plan every few minutes but never her determination. Ahab is methodical, commanding, and terrifyingly focused. He charts a course and bends everyone to his will. While Dory stumbles forward with childlike wonder, Ahab marches toward his fate like a man possessed. Their methods reflect their worlds: one is colorful and fluid, the other dark and rigid.

## What Do Their Crews Think of Them?

Dory inspires trust, even when she’s leading people in circles. Her optimism is contagious, and her flaws make her endearing. The crew of the Pequod, however, follows Ahab out of fear and duty. They know his obsession is dangerous, but they are powerless to resist. Dory’s companions are willing, even joyful. Ahab’s crew is doomed. One brings people together; the other tears them apart.

## What Do They Leave Behind?

Dory’s legacy is one of love and connection. She helps reunite a family, and in doing so, finds her own place in the world. Ahab’s legacy is a grave in the sea. He never catches Moby Dick, and his obsession drowns everyone around him. Dory teaches us that even with flaws, we can make a difference. Ahab warns us that unchecked obsession can destroy everything.

## Could They Ever Understand Each Other?

Imagining a conversation between Dory and Ahab is like imagining oil and water trying to mix. Dory would probably forget why she was on the ship within minutes, and Ahab would be furious at her lack of focus. But maybe—just maybe—Dory’s relentless cheer could momentarily crack Ahab’s dark exterior. And perhaps, Ahab could teach Dory that some things are worth remembering.
