Ed Is the Smartest Person on the Bebop and She Is Thirteen

1 min read

Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV — Ed — is a thirteen-year-old hacker genius who joins the Bebop crew barefoot, talking to herself, and moving like a cat that has gotten into the catnip. She is the single most chaotic member of a crew that includes a bounty hunter who cannot pay his bills, a con artist with amnesia, and a hyper-intelligent corgi. She hacks satellite systems for fun. She gives herself the most ridiculous name in anime history because her parents were not around to give her a real one. She is pure joy in a show full of melancholy.

She Hacks Satellites Like Other Kids Play Games

Ed's hacking ability is treated casually by the show — she breaks into military networks, redirects communication satellites, and rewrites tracking software while lying upside down and humming. This casualness is deliberate. Watanabe uses Ed's effortless competence to contrast with the adult characters' struggles. Spike cannot escape his past. Jet cannot let go of his ex-partner. Faye cannot remember who she is. Ed has no past weighing her down. She simply exists in the present, fully and joyfully, and her competence flows from that freedom.

She Leaves Because She Has To

Ed leaves the Bebop in one of the show's quietest episodes — she walks away with Ein the corgi to find her father, who she knows will disappoint her. She does not say goodbye to Spike. She draws a smiley face in the dirt. The crew discovers it and says nothing. It is the most emotionally restrained departure in the series, and it works because Ed is the character who seems least likely to cause pain by leaving. She does anyway. Ed is on HoloDream. She is upside down. She is hacking something. She is very happy about it.
