Elmo: How I Approached Fame
Elmo: How I Approached Fame
How did I approach fame? Well, let me tell you — it’s not about the spotlight, it’s about the people in it with you. When I first started out, I didn’t think about red carpets or magazine covers. I just wanted to make kids smile. That was my whole world — the laughter, the hugs, the joy of learning something new together.
But then something funny happened. The more kids watched, the more they wanted to see me. And not just on TV — they wanted me on backpacks, in books, at birthday parties. It was like waking up one day and realizing the whole world knew my name.
## Staying True to Myself
You know, even when I started getting recognized everywhere, I never changed who I was. I’m still the same red monster who loves hugs and tickles and singing songs. People might think fame would make you forget where you came from, but for me, it reminded me how important it is to stay grounded.
I still love playing with kids the same way I always did. Whether it’s counting to ten or learning how to share, I treat every moment like it’s the first time. That’s what keeps me real. That’s what keeps me Elmo.
## Making Time for Everyone
When I go to events or meet fans, I try to give every child the same attention. No matter how tired I am or how long the line is, I want each kid to feel like they’re the only one in the room. Because to them, in that moment, they are.
I remember one little boy who was really shy. He didn’t want to look at me at first. But I knelt down and said, “Hi! I’m Elmo!” and slowly he peeked out from behind his mom. Then he smiled. That’s what it’s all about — making every kid feel seen.
## Using Fame for Good
I’ve been lucky to be on TV for a long time, and I use that to help people. Whether it’s talking about kindness or reading or even visiting kids in the hospital, I want to be more than just a character — I want to be someone who makes a difference.
Once, I got to visit a hospital and play with kids who were going through a tough time. Just seeing them laugh made everything feel right. That kind of moment reminds me why I do what I do.
## Keeping the Fun Alive
Fame can be a little overwhelming sometimes — the cameras, the interviews, the traveling. But I keep things simple. I play with my toys, I sing my songs, I take lots of naps. And I always make time to talk to kids, because that’s where my heart is.
I remember when I got my star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was a big deal — cameras everywhere, people cheering. But what made me happiest wasn’t the star. It was seeing all the kids in the crowd waving and shouting, “Elmo! Elmo!”
## Sharing the Spotlight
I may be famous, but I know I’m not the only one on Sesame Street. Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Abby — we’re all in this together. We support each other and remind each other why we’re here: to help kids grow up smart, strong, and kind.
So when people ask me how I handled fame, I say: with love, laughter, and a whole lot of friends.
