Every Goku Transformation Ranked: Kaioken to Ultra Instinct
Goku has broken his own ceiling more times than any character in fiction. Here's every major transformation, in order.
Kaioken
The first major power multiplier — introduced in the Saiyan Saga. Goku can multiply his power output at the cost of massive physical strain. Kaioken x20 is his maximum at that point, and it nearly destroys his body every time. Later revived and stacked on top of Super Saiyan Blue.
Super Saiyan
The transformation that defined an era. Triggered by Krillin's death on Namek, SSJ multiplies base power 50x. The golden hair, teal eyes, and golden aura became one of anime's most iconic visuals. Every form after this is an evolution or combination.
Super Saiyan 2
SSJ2 doubles SSJ's power. First achieved canonically by Gohan in the Cell Games; Goku achieves it offscreen in Other World. The increase in electricity-style energy emanating from the aura is the visual tell.
Super Saiyan 3
SSJ3 is SSJ2 cubed in power, with the iconic flowing hair that extends to the knees. The energy drain is extreme — unsustainable for more than short bursts. Goku uses it against Buu but notes it burns through stamina faster than most battles allow.
Super Saiyan God (SSG)
A transformation that requires divine ki rather than standard Saiyan power multiplication. Introduced in Battle of Gods. Red hair, leaner form, dramatically more efficient energy use. Goku absorbs SSG power permanently into his base form.
Super Saiyan Blue (SSGSS)
SSG ki combined with the SSJ form — the multiplication of divine energy. The standard "strongest" form for most of Super. Stackable with Kaioken for brief windows of extreme output.
Ultra Instinct (Sign and Mastered)
The technique of gods — the body reacts without conscious thought, eliminating hesitation and defense lag. Sign is the unstable version; Mastered (True) Ultra Instinct has silver hair and operates at a level beyond what any god of destruction has achieved. This is Goku's current ceiling.
