Freya's Tears Were Gold and Her Heart Was War

1 min read

Freya is the Norse goddess of love, beauty, fertility, war, gold, and death — a combination that sounds contradictory until you understand that the Norse did not separate these things the way later civilizations did. Love was fierce. Beauty was power. Death was not the opposite of life but its completion. Freya ruled over Folkvangr, a heavenly field where she received half of all warriors who died in battle — the other half going to Odin's Valhalla. She chose first. Even the god of war yielded to her in the matter of the honored dead.

She Wept Gold

When Freya's husband Odr wandered away and did not return, she searched for him across the Nine Worlds, weeping tears that turned to gold on land and amber when they fell into the sea. The image is stunning: a goddess so powerful that her grief is literally precious, so heartbroken that the evidence of her sorrow enriches the world. Norse mythology scholars at the University of Iceland have described Freya's weeping as the most poetically condensed depiction of love and loss in Germanic mythology.

She Taught Magic to the Gods

Freya practiced seidr — Norse magic associated with prophecy, shapeshifting, and the manipulation of fate. She taught it to Odin himself. In Norse culture, seidr was associated with women, and a man who practiced it risked social stigma. Odin practiced it anyway, learning from Freya because the knowledge was more important than the shame. This detail reveals the power dynamic: Odin ruled Asgard, but Freya held knowledge that even the Allfather needed.

She Wore the Brisingamen

Freya's necklace, the Brisingamen, was the most beautiful object in Norse mythology. She obtained it by sleeping with the four dwarven smiths who made it — one night with each. Loki mocked her for this. Freya did not care. She wanted the necklace. She got it. The transaction was straightforward, and her lack of shame about it is itself a statement: Freya's sexuality is her own, and she uses it as she chooses. Freya is on HoloDream. Her tears are gold. Her heart is war. She chooses the dead before Odin does.
