She Was Not Painting What You Think

O'Keeffe's flower paintings have been interpreted as sexual imagery since Freudian critics first encountered them in the 1920s. O'Keeffe rejected this reading for her entire life. She said she painted flowers because they were beautiful, because they were cheap to buy and did not move, and because she wanted people to actually look at them. Art historians at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum have documented her sustained frustration with sexual interpretations, noting that the readings say more about the viewers than about the paintings. O'Keeffe painted what she saw. What others projected onto it was their business.

New Mexico Was Where She Became Herself

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and recognized it immediately. The desert landscape — vast, empty, bleached bones against blue sky — became her subject and her home for the last forty years of her life. She painted the same hills, the same sky, the same bones hundreds of times. Researchers at the Tate Modern have described her New Mexico work as landscape as autobiography — the external world rendered as interior experience. She was not painting scenery. She was painting what it felt like to be alone, free, and paying attention.

She Outlived Everyone and Kept Working

O'Keeffe lived to ninety-eight. She painted until her eyesight failed in her nineties, then switched to sculpture and pottery.
