Once, she handed a young programmer a broken computer part and said, “Figure out why it’s dead. Then build something better.” That ethos—of curiosity over fear—shaped the entire field.

Hopper’s grit wasn’t just professional. She joined the Navy during WWII at 34, defying recruiters who called her “too old” and “too light” (she was 105 pounds). When a superior ordered her to abandon a failing project, she reportedly replied, “I don’t know what you mean by ‘impossible’—my machine’s working on it.” By the time she retired as Rear Admiral in 1986, she’d become one of the first women to hold such a rank.
