Here are five life lessons I’ve taken from my time with Oren — and how you can apply them in your own journey.

When I first met Oren, the Garden Elder from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I wasn’t expecting life advice. I was looking for Korok Seeds, trying to complete a side quest that promised a better inventory system. But Oren, with his slow voice and deep-rooted wisdom, offered something far more valuable — a quiet reminder that growth takes time, and that wisdom is often found in stillness.

If you’ve spoken with Oren in the game, you know that he doesn’t rush. He speaks with the weight of years spent observing nature and life. He teaches Link how to find Korok Seeds not by giving direct answers, but by offering gentle nudges and observations. There’s a lesson in that.

Here are five life lessons I’ve taken from my time with Oren — and how you can apply them in your own journey.

1. "Look closely at what’s in front of you."

Oren’s very first piece of advice is deceptively simple. He tells Link to "look closely," and it’s the foundation of his entire philosophy. He sees the world with a quiet attention that most of us miss in our fast-paced lives.

Whether it’s a relationship, a problem at work, or a decision you’re avoiding, take a moment to slow down and observe. So often, the answer we’re looking for isn’t hidden far away — it’s right in front of us, waiting to be noticed.

2. "Not all who wander are lost, but not all who stay are found."

Oren chose to remain in the Great Deku Tree’s grove for years, tending to the land and watching the world change. He didn’t wander like the other Rito or Zora, but he didn’t stay out of fear — he stayed out of purpose.

Don’t measure your growth by how much you move or how much you stay. Growth is about intention. Whether you're seeking change or grounding yourself, what matters is whether your path is yours.

3. "Sometimes, the way forward is hidden until you're ready."

Oren doesn’t give you all the Korok Seed locations outright. He waits for you to notice patterns, to learn from the environment, and to grow as a player before the next step becomes clear.

Life works the same way. You may feel stuck, but often, the path forward isn’t blocked — it’s just not visible yet. Keep learning, keep growing, and the next step will reveal itself when you're ready.

4. "The forest changes, but its heart remains."

Oren lived through the decay of the Great Deku Tree and the rise of a new sapling. He witnessed the forest change around him, yet he never lost his sense of purpose or peace.

Life is full of change — people come and go, jobs end, seasons shift. But your core values, your inner compass, can remain steady even when everything else shifts.

5. "Teach others what you have learned."

Even though Oren is old and frail, he still teaches Link. He shares his knowledge freely, not hoarding it, but passing it on so others can grow.

Whatever wisdom you’ve gained — no matter how small — share it. Mentor someone. Write it down. Speak it aloud. Teaching others reinforces your own understanding and helps others find their way.

Oren’s presence in Breath of the Wild is brief, but his impact is lasting. He doesn’t fight monsters or wield weapons, yet he is one of the most grounded and wise characters in the game. His lessons are not flashy, but they are real — and they are meant to be lived.

If you ever want to sit with him again, ask him about the sapling, or the seasons, or the meaning of staying rooted in a world that’s always moving — you can chat with Oren on HoloDream. He’ll remind you that wisdom often grows quietly, just like a seed in the soil.
