Here are five life lessons I’ve taken from the journey of Hyakkimaru and Dororo — and how we can apply them to our own.

I’ve always been fascinated by how stories from anime can teach us about resilience, morality, and the human spirit. One such story that left a deep impression on me is Dororo — not just for its striking visuals or intense narrative, but for the quiet wisdom it carries beneath the surface. While the world of Dororo is steeped in darkness and bloodshed, it also offers life lessons that are surprisingly applicable to our modern lives.

Here are five life lessons I’ve taken from the journey of Hyakkimaru and Dororo — and how we can apply them to our own.

1. Compassion Can Be a Choice — Even in a Cruel World

Dororo, a young orphaned thief, consistently chooses kindness despite the brutality of the world around him. He could have easily become hardened, but instead, he chooses to care for Hyakkimaru, a boy born without limbs or senses due to a demonic pact.

In our own lives, we’re often faced with situations where cynicism feels like the default. But compassion doesn’t have to be an automatic reaction — it can be a conscious decision. Whether it’s showing empathy to a difficult coworker or helping a stranger in need, choosing kindness when it’s hardest often makes the biggest difference.

2. Identity Is More Than What You’ve Lost

Hyakkimaru’s journey begins with a profound sense of loss — he was born without body parts, given away by his father in exchange for power. Yet, as he regains his limbs and senses, he learns that his identity isn’t defined by what was taken from him.

So many of us carry wounds — emotional, physical, or psychological — that shape how we see ourselves. But like Hyakkimaru, we can learn that our worth isn’t tied to what we’ve lost or what’s been taken. Our identity is shaped by who we choose to become, not just by what we’ve endured.

3. Friendship Can Defy Circumstance

Dororo and Hyakkimaru come from completely different worlds — one a street-smart orphan, the other a sheltered nobleman raised in isolation. Yet their bond becomes one of the strongest elements of the story.

True friendship often defies logic or background. It grows from shared values, mutual respect, and emotional investment. In our lives, it’s worth nurturing relationships that might not make sense on paper but feel deeply right in practice. These are the friendships that help us grow and thrive.

4. Courage Isn’t the Absence of Fear — It’s Moving Forward Anyway

Hyakkimaru faces demons — both literal and metaphorical — with every step he takes. Yet, he moves forward not because he isn’t afraid, but because he has a purpose greater than his fear.

Courage in real life isn’t about being fearless. It’s about taking action despite your fears. Whether it’s applying for a new job, ending a toxic relationship, or standing up for what’s right, true courage is choosing to act when it would be easier to stay still.

5. Sometimes, the Right Thing Isn’t the Easy Thing

Throughout Dororo, characters are forced to make difficult moral choices. Hyakkimaru, in particular, must decide whether to reclaim all his body parts — knowing it would mean killing the demons who now possess them, even if they’ve shown him kindness.

Life rarely gives us clear-cut answers. Often, doing the right thing requires sacrifice, discomfort, or even loss. But staying true to your values — even when it’s hard — is what builds integrity and earns self-respect.

I’ve found that reflecting on characters like Dororo and Hyakkimaru helps me reframe my own challenges. Their journey reminds us that even in a world filled with pain, we still have the power to choose kindness, courage, and connection.
