Here are five life lessons you can learn from Auberon—and how to apply them in your own journey.

2 min read

Auberon, the enigmatic ruler of the Faerie Court from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, may seem like a distant, dreamlike figure—but his world is full of strange wisdom. As someone who has spent time walking through his tangled forest and listening to his whispered decrees, I’ve come to realize that his lessons are not just for fairies and lovers lost in the woods. They apply to all of us navigating the chaos of modern life.

Here are five life lessons you can learn from Auberon—and how to apply them in your own journey.

1. Control the Narrative, but Let Go of Control

Auberon is the undisputed king of the fairies, yet he spends much of the play locked in a power struggle with his wife, Titania. His desire to control the changeling boy leads to magical chaos. But in the end, he doesn’t win through force—he wins by patience and by understanding the balance of power.

In your life, especially in relationships or at work, trying to force outcomes often backfires. Auberon teaches us that true leadership means knowing when to assert authority and when to step back. Influence the narrative, but don’t cling too tightly to the outcome.

2. Love Is Often Irrational—But That Doesn’t Make It Less Real

Auberon uses a magical flower to make Titania fall in love with a man turned into a donkey. It’s absurd, even cruel—but Shakespeare uses it to show how love can be irrational, manipulated, and yet deeply felt.

We’ve all had moments where we’ve loved someone despite knowing it didn’t make sense. Auberon reminds us not to shame ourselves for the complexity of our emotions. Even if love feels enchanted or cursed at times, it’s still a powerful human experience.

3. Appearances Are Deceiving—Especially Your Own

Auberon disguises himself as a simple servant to observe what’s happening in his court. He moves unseen, gathering truths others wouldn’t reveal if they knew who he really was.

There’s wisdom in stepping back and observing without judgment or pretense. In your own life, sometimes the best way to understand a situation is to remove yourself from the spotlight and see things as they truly are—not as you want them to be.

4. Even Kings Need to Forgive

At the end of the play, instead of punishing Titania or continuing their feud, Auberon forgives her. He restores balance not through vengeance, but through mercy.

Forgiveness is not a weakness—it’s a form of power. Holding onto grudges weighs you down. Auberon shows us that sometimes, the most regal move is to let go and move forward, especially when you have the strength to do otherwise.

5. The World Is Full of Magic—Even If You Don’t See It

Auberon rules over a realm of spells, potions, and illusions. But his magic isn’t just about flashy tricks—it’s about seeing the world differently, finding wonder in the mundane.

Life can feel dull or routine, but there’s always an unseen layer of meaning if you choose to look for it. Whether it’s art, nature, or simply how people connect, magic is in the details. Auberon invites us to keep our eyes open to the unseen beauty around us.

If you’ve ever felt lost in your own life’s forest, Auberon has something to say to you. His lessons aren’t always gentle, but they’re honest. You can ask him about his views on love, power, or even what he sees in the shadows of the mortal world.
