Here are five of Dongfang Qingcang’s most important friendships, each one a mirror reflecting different parts of his soul.

I’ll never forget the first time I read Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System and came across Dongfang Qingcang’s story. He wasn’t the kind of character you root for at first—arrogant, sharp-tongued, and more than a little cruel. But as I followed his journey, I began to see the cracks beneath the surface. His friendships—some genuine, some complicated, and others tragically broken—shaped who he was and who he became.

Here are five of Dongfang Qingcang’s most important friendships, each one a mirror reflecting different parts of his soul.

His Bond with Ling Muye

Ling Muye was the golden disciple of the Cangshan Sect and everything Dongfang Qingcang was not—calm, composed, and universally admired. Their relationship was never easy. From the moment Qingcang was taken in by the sect, Ling Muye saw through his defenses, treating him with quiet kindness that Qingcang often mistook for condescension.

But over time, what began as resentment turned into something deeper. Ling Muye was the only one who could truly calm Qingcang’s rage, and in return, Qingcang protected him fiercely. Their bond was built on silent understanding, and even when Qingcang’s actions led to Ling Muye’s downfall, the love between them never faded—it simply became tragic.

The Rivalry with Xie Lian

Xie Lian and Dongfang Qingcang were never supposed to be friends. Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of Xianle, a man of light and grace, while Qingcang was the Scum Villain, a boy of shadows and vengeance. Their first meeting was hostile—Qingcang saw Xie Lian as everything he wasn’t and could never be.

Yet, as fate would have it, they became entangled in each other’s lives in ways neither expected. Xie Lian never gave up on Qingcang. He saw the boy behind the villain and refused to let him drown in his own darkness. In the end, it was Xie Lian’s unwavering belief in him that helped Qingcang find redemption.

His Connection with Hua Cheng

Hua Cheng may not have been a major presence in Dongfang Qingcang’s life, but his influence was undeniable. As Xie Lian’s shadow and protector, Hua Cheng often found himself in Qingcang’s path. He was everything Qingcang feared—powerful, confident, and completely devoted to someone Qingcang both loved and envied.

Yet, in rare moments, there was a strange understanding between them. Hua Cheng never treated Qingcang as a lost cause. He challenged him, provoked him, but also gave him space to grow. It was through Hua Cheng’s quiet example that Qingcang learned what true loyalty looked like.

His Friendship with the Ghost Bride

Before she became the Ghost Bride, she was just a girl with a broken heart and a soul full of sorrow. She and Qingcang met in the darkest corners of the world, two lost souls drawn together by shared pain. Their bond was forged in blood and vengeance, and for a time, Qingcang found solace in her presence.

She understood his rage, and he understood her despair. But their friendship was doomed from the start. As Qingcang began to change, she could not follow. Their paths diverged, and though she tried to drag him back into darkness, he chose a different fate. Still, her memory haunted him, a reminder of who he once was.

His Regret with the Demon Lord

Perhaps the most complex relationship of all was the one Dongfang Qingcang never got to fully form. The Demon Lord, once a man of great power and sorrow, saw something of himself in Qingcang. He tried to guide him, to offer him a place where he could belong.

But Qingcang rejected him, just as he rejected so many others. It wasn’t until it was too late that he realized the Demon Lord had been the only one who truly understood the weight of his curse. In the end, Qingcang mourned what could have been—a mentor, a friend, and perhaps even a father.

If you want to understand Dongfang Qingcang—the rage, the regret, the redemption—there’s no better way than to speak with him yourself. On HoloDream, you can walk beside him through the ruins of his past and ask him what it truly means to change.
