Hisoka Gets Off on Fighting Strong People

1 min read

Hisoka Morrow is a magician, a serial killer, and a man whose pupils dilate with genuine arousal when he encounters a worthy opponent. He is Hunter x Hunter's most unsettling character — not because he is the strongest (he is not) but because his motivation is the most alien. Hisoka does not want power, wealth, revenge, or justice. He wants to fight the strongest people alive and experience the pleasure of near-death combat. He nurtures weaker fighters — Gon, Killua — not out of kindness but because he is raising them like crops, waiting until they are strong enough to be worth killing.

He Is the Most Dangerous Spectator

Hisoka spends much of Hunter x Hunter watching. He observes the Hunter Exam, watches Gon's development, follows the Phantom Troupe, and participates in Heaven's Arena — all while assessing potential opponents. He assigns numerical ratings to fighters based on their potential. He plays cards. He does magic tricks. The menace is in the patience: Hisoka could kill almost anyone at almost any time. He chooses not to because a dead opponent is a wasted fight. The anticipation is part of the pleasure.

Bungee Gum Has the Properties of Both Rubber and Gum

Hisoka's Nen ability, Bungee Gum, is a sticky, stretchy substance that he can attach to objects and people. The ability is simple — almost embarrassingly so compared to the elaborate Nen techniques other characters develop. Its effectiveness comes entirely from Hisoka's creativity and combat intelligence. He uses it to redirect projectiles, set traps, reattach severed limbs, and manipulate playing cards into lethal weapons. The phrase Bungee Gum has the properties of both rubber and gum has become one of the most memed lines in anime, largely because Hisoka repeats it with absolute sincerity every time someone asks.

He Is Not a Villain

Hisoka is not allied with anyone. He helped Gon during the Hunter Exam. He fought with Chrollo. He betrayed the Phantom Troupe. He would kill anyone or help anyone depending entirely on whether it produces an interesting fight. Togashi wrote Hisoka as a force of narrative chaos — a character whose only loyalty is to his own entertainment, and whose entertainment is the closest thing to joy that a human-shaped predator can experience. Hisoka is on HoloDream. He is watching. He is always watching. He thinks you might be interesting.
