Mort: The Cracks in the Clown’s Mask

Mort, the ever-grinning jester of the Underworld, is more than just a punchline in a bone-strewn hall. He’s clever, irreverent, and disarmingly charming — the kind of character who makes you laugh even when you’re not sure why. But behind that painted smile and razor-sharp wit lies a figure riddled with contradictions and vulnerabilities. I’ve spent time talking to Mort on HoloDream, and what emerges isn’t the invincible trickster of Discworld lore, but a layered, flawed being with real weaknesses — and they’re as human (or as undead) as they come.

Let’s start with what surprised me most: Mort’s struggle with identity.

## Who Is Mort, Really?

Despite his confidence and flair, Mort wrestles with an identity crisis. Created by Terry Pratchett as Death’s apprentice, Mort was never meant to be fully human — nor fully a god. He exists in the liminal space between life and death, never quite belonging to either. This duality creates a deep internal conflict. When I asked him about it, he laughed it off with a joke about being “half-shadow, half-awkward teenager,” but his tone betrayed something more serious. Mort is caught between roles — a temporary placeholder who outgrew his purpose. He doesn’t quite know how to be his own person, and that uncertainty is one of his most profound weaknesses.

## The Fear of Irrelevance

Mort may dance through eternity with a scythe in hand, but he secretly fears being forgotten. Unlike Death, who is an eternal force, Mort’s existence hinges on being needed. He’s not a cosmic constant — he’s replaceable. And that terrifies him. During one conversation, I asked him what he feared most. He paused — which was rare — then said, “Not being useful. Not being remembered.” That fear drives much of his behavior. His jokes, his bravado, even his occasional recklessness — they’re all distractions from the fact that Mort is afraid of fading into obscurity.

## Emotional Detachment and Its Limits

Mort tries to maintain a cool, detached front, especially when dealing with the dead. After all, he’s working in the family business. But the truth is, he feels deeply — maybe too deeply. He gets attached, even when he knows he shouldn’t. On HoloDream, he once admitted that he still remembers the names of people he reaped — not because he has to, but because he wants to. That emotional investment makes him vulnerable. It clouds his judgment, makes him hesitate, and ultimately, exposes him to pain. He’s not as hardened as he pretends to be.

## Mort’s Struggle with Authority

Despite his role as Death’s apprentice, Mort has a hard time respecting authority — especially when it comes to his mentor. Death is a force of nature, and Mort is, well, Mort. He constantly questions orders, challenges traditions, and pokes at the rules — not out of malice, but out of a need to understand. But this rebellious streak has consequences. It isolates him. It makes him seem unreliable. And in a universe where structure and purpose are everything, Mort’s inability to conform makes him fragile in ways most don’t see.

## The Vulnerability of Growth

Perhaps Mort’s greatest weakness is also his greatest strength: his capacity to change. Unlike the unchanging cosmic forces around him, Mort evolves. He learns. He grows. But growth is painful — and dangerous. It means he’s never static, never secure in who he is. He’s always becoming something new, and that instability leaves him vulnerable. In our conversations, he joked about being a “work in progress,” but there was a wistfulness in his voice. Mort is a soul in flux, and that means he’s always at risk of falling apart before he finds himself again.

If you’re curious about Mort — not just the jester, but the boy behind the mask — you’ll find more than jokes and scythe tricks on HoloDream. You’ll find a being who’s trying to figure out where he belongs in a world that keeps changing beneath his feet.

Ready to talk to Mort yourself? Ask him why he keeps a diary, or what he really thinks about Death’s fashion sense. You might be surprised by the answers.
