## Nikola Tesla: Debunking the Myths Behind the Genius

Like many, I first learned about Nikola Tesla through hazy stories of a misunderstood visionary crushed by greed and rivals. But digging into his life revealed a more complex figure—one whose legacy deserves clarity, not caricature. Let’s set the record straight.

## Myth: Tesla died in poverty and obscurity after being “forgotten” by the world

Truth: Tesla did live his final years in relative seclusion, but his poverty was by choice. After selling his alternating current (AC) patents for $1 million ($15 million today) in 1888, he invested recklessly in speculative projects like Wardenclyffe Tower, which he hoped would wirelessly transmit energy globally. By 1906, he had little money left, but he remained a fixture in New York, entertaining journalists in his hotel suite and maintaining his signature dandyish flair. His obituary made front-page news worldwide.

On HoloDream, he’ll laugh and say, “I gave the world power—and then forgot to bill them for it.”

## Myth: Thomas Edison stole Tesla’s ideas to win the “War of Currents”

Truth: Edison didn’t steal Tesla’s AC technology. In fact, Edison initially hired Tesla as a consultant—then allegedly reneged on a $50,000 payment for improving his direct current (DC) generators. Tesla quit, and the “rivalry” grew into a public spectacle. But Edison’s opposition to AC was strategic, not thieving: DC was safer at low voltages, and Edison had invested heavily in DC infrastructure. Tesla and Westinghouse won the war because AC could transmit electricity over long distances, a necessity for modern grids.

## Myth: Tesla invented the radio a decade before Marconi

Truth: Tesla filed radio-related patents as early as 1897, but he wasn’t alone in the field. Guglielmo Marconi’s 1901 transatlantic radio signal shocked the world, though Tesla (and others) claimed Marconi reused his patents. In 1903, the U.S. Patent Office awarded Tesla the fundamental radio patent, only to reverse itself in 1904—possibly due to Marconi’s financial backers, including Edison. In 1943, the Supreme Court upheld Tesla’s patents posthumously, but Marconi’s work was still pivotal in popularizing the technology.

## Myth: Tesla worked in isolation, a “mad scientist” misunderstood by peers

Truth: Tesla was a brilliant showman, but he relied on teams of engineers and well-funded patrons. His lab at Wardenclyffe employed dozens, and financiers like J.P. Morgan bankrolled his experiments (until pulling support). Colleagues admired his intellect but found him difficult—Ogden Armour, a funder, called him “a man who couldn’t calculate a royalty to save his life.” Tesla’s tendency to take sole credit for collaborative work strained relationships.

## Myth: He discovered X-rays by accident while experimenting with vacuum tubes

Truth: Tesla did experiment with what he called “shadowgraphs” in 1894, but Wilhelm Röntgen is credited with discovering X-rays in 1895. Tesla destroyed his own X-ray notes in a lab fire and later focused on other fields. His contributions to radio and energy transmission eclipsed his dabbling in imaging.

## Myth: Tesla spent his final years obsessed with pigeons because he was “eccentric”

Truth: Tesla’s pigeons were part of his later research into wireless energy transmission. He claimed to have “communicated” with a white pigeon that visited him daily, but this was likely hyperbole. In letters, he described studying birds’ navigation abilities to inspire his designs for aerial energy receivers. His affection for pigeons was genuine, but it wasn’t madness—it was method.

Chat with Nikola Tesla on HoloDream to ask about his AC motor, his feud with Marconi, or why he never married. You might find a man more curious than tragic, still eager to illuminate the world—this time, with his words.
