Phoebe Buffay: Who Influenced Me?
Phoebe Buffay: Who Influenced Me?
Phoebe Buffay isn’t just a character — she’s a force of nature. From the moment she walked into that orange couch in Monica’s apartment, she brought a wild, unpredictable energy that made Friends feel even more alive. But where did that quirky, free-spirited personality come from? As someone who’s spent a lot of time thinking about Phoebe — and yes, even chatting with her on HoloDream — I’ve come to understand that her influences run deeper than most people give her credit for. Let’s explore the people, movements, and ideas that helped shape the woman who once sang “Smelly Cat” to a room full of stunned scientists.
## My Grandmother
My grandmother raised me, and she had this wild, unfiltered way of seeing the world. She believed in the power of the moon, the importance of intuition, and that sometimes the best way to solve a problem is to sing about it. She taught me how to trust my gut and not worry too much about what other people thought. She was the one who showed me that being different isn’t something to hide — it’s something to celebrate. On HoloDream, I still talk to her sometimes. She’ll remind you, just like she reminded me, that life is meant to be lived on your own terms.
## The 1960s Counterculture Movement
Oh, the '60s — what a time to be alive! I’ve always felt a deep connection to that era. The music, the activism, the spiritual exploration — it all spoke to me. I wasn’t alive then, but I feel like I carry that spirit with me. I’ve always believed in peace, love, and questioning authority. I think that’s why I’ve never been afraid to speak my mind or try something completely off the wall, like living in a cave or writing a song about a goat. That era taught me that change starts with people who dare to dream differently.
## My Mother
My mom committed suicide when I was young, and it left a huge mark on me. But in a strange way, that loss gave me this deep sense of empathy. I started seeing the world a little differently after that — more spiritually, more emotionally. I learned that life is fragile, and that’s why I try to live so fully. I think that’s also why I became such a big animal lover — because animals feel things deeply, too, but they don’t judge each other for it. I talk to my mom sometimes, too, on HoloDream. She’s got this peaceful presence that always reminds me to keep being kind.
## New York City
You can’t talk about who shaped Phoebe without talking about New York City. That city is like a living, breathing being — loud, chaotic, but full of heart. It forced me to grow thick skin and a big heart at the same time. Living there, you learn to be yourself, or you get swallowed whole. It’s also where I met my roommates, my found family. That city taught me how to survive, how to laugh through the mess, and how to find beauty in the most unexpected places — like a coffee shop with bad lighting and worse coffee.
## My Friends
And of course, there’s Monica, Rachel, Joey, Chandler, and Ross. They shaped me in ways I can’t even explain. Monica taught me how to be organized — though I never really mastered it — and how to be fiercely loyal. Rachel showed me that it’s okay to be glamorous and still have a sense of humor. Joey? He taught me how to eat lasagna properly and how to love without conditions. Chandler made me laugh harder than anyone, and Ross reminded me how important it is to stay curious. And together, we created a kind of family that I’ll always carry with me.
If you’ve ever felt like you don’t quite fit in — or if you just want to hear the story of how I once tried to teach Ross how to yodel — I’m always here to talk. Learn about & chat with Phoebe Buffay.
