Prince Charming Never Said That: Debunking Myths and Misquotes

You’ve probably heard a version of this quote: “Where there is a woman, there is magic.” Or maybe you’ve seen “Once you are a prince, you are always a prince.” These are often credited to Prince Charming, but the truth is, he never said them — because he never existed.

Unlike historical figures with preserved letters or philosophical texts, Prince Charming is a fictional archetype. He appears across fairy tales — most famously in versions of Cinderella — but he rarely speaks. His role is often symbolic: the handsome rescuer, the reward for endurance and virtue. Yet over time, people have attributed all sorts of lines to him as if he were a real person with a voice.

Let’s separate fact from fantasy.

## “Once You Are a Prince, You Are Always a Prince”

This quote, often used to romanticize nobility or permanence, does not appear in any traditional version of Cinderella or similar fairy tales. The idea of a prince’s identity being immutable might resonate emotionally, but it has no textual basis in classic literature or folklore. It’s a modern invention retroactively tied to a character who, in most tellings, barely gets a line.

In fact, many versions of Cinderella don’t even name the prince. He’s simply “the prince” — a plot device rather than a developed character.

## “Where There Is a Woman, There Is Magic”

This poetic line is sometimes shared as a charming sentiment supposedly spoken by Prince Charming. However, it’s a contemporary phrase, not rooted in any fairy tale text. The earliest known usage of this line appears in modern poetry and motivational writing — far removed from the medieval or 17th-century origins of Cinderella stories.

It’s easy to imagine a prince saying something like this while gazing into Cinderella’s eyes, but that’s the work of modern retellings and Hollywood reinterpretations, not the original tales.

## “Love Doesn’t Need a Reason”

Another line often attributed to Prince Charming — especially in romantic films or social media posts — is “Love doesn’t need a reason.” While emotionally appealing, this quote is not found in any classic version of Cinderella, nor is it part of traditional fairy tales where the prince appears.

In older versions, the prince falls for Cinderella based on her beauty, kindness, or mysterious allure. But the idea of love being reasonless or irrational is a modern psychological framing, not a fairy tale one.

## “She Was the Kind of Girl Who Believed in Happy Endings”

This quote, often shared as a nostalgic reflection on idealism, is another modern creation. It doesn’t come from any known fairy tale or literary source tied to Prince Charming. In fact, it sounds more like a line from a contemporary novel or screenplay than from the Brothers Grimm or Charles Perrault.

It's tempting to imagine Prince Charming narrating Cinderella’s story this way, but again, that’s a product of recent storytelling, not the original character.

## What Did Prince Charming Actually Say?

In most traditional tellings, Prince Charming says very little. In Charles Perrault’s 1697 version of Cinderella, the prince is mostly silent, captivated by Cinderella’s grace and beauty. In the Brothers Grimm’s Ashputtel (1812), the prince is similarly a passive figure, enchanted by the girl who fits the slipper.

He has no monologues, no grand declarations, and certainly no poetic musings attributed to him. He exists to elevate the heroine, not to express his own inner world.

## Why Do We Attribute Quotes to a Fictional Figure?

We often assign words to iconic characters to give them depth or to find meaning in their roles. Prince Charming is a symbol of idealized romance, so we project poetic sentiments onto him — even if they don’t originate with him.

But the truth is, Prince Charming was never meant to be a philosopher or poet. He was a narrative placeholder, a reward for virtue and perseverance.

Still, if you're curious about what a prince might say — or want to ask him about his thoughts on love, destiny, or whether he ever wanted more than just a glass slipper — you can talk to Prince Charming on HoloDream.
