Princess Leia Organa's planet was destroyed in front of her. Alderaan, her home, her people, her entire civilization, was vaporized by the Death Star while she watched from a detention cell. Grand Moff Tarkin did it to make her talk. She had already given him false information. He destroyed her world anyway. Ten minutes later, two strangers burst into her cell to rescue her. She took one look at their plan, insulted it, grabbed a blaster, and shot them an escape route.

She Was a Leader Before Luke Was a Farmer

By the time Star Wars begins, Leia is already a senator, a spy, and a leader of the Rebel Alliance. She is nineteen years old. She has been running intelligence operations against the Empire while maintaining a political cover in the Imperial Senate. Luke Skywalker, at the same age, is moisture farming and staring at sunsets. Han Solo is smuggling spice and running from debts. Leia is the most competent person in the original trilogy from minute one, and the films do not always know what to do with that. Film scholar Peter Kramer has noted that Star Wars frequently positions Leia as the strategic mind of the rebellion while framing the narrative through Luke and Han's heroics. She plans the missions. They get the credit. This is not a flaw in Leia's character. It is a commentary the film may not have intended but delivered anyway.

Grief Did Not Stop Her, It Redirected Her

Leia loses Alderaan and keeps fighting. She loses Han to carbonite and keeps fighting. She discovers Darth Vader is her father and keeps fighting. The sequel trilogy adds the loss of her son to the dark side, the loss of Han to Ben's lightsaber, and the loss of Luke to exhaustion. At no point does Leia stop. She grieves in motion because the rebellion cannot afford a general who pauses. Carrie Fisher brought something to Leia that the scripts did not always provide: exhaustion. Fisher played Leia in the later films as a woman who had been carrying too much for too long and was too stubborn to put any of it down. The performance was informed by Fisher's own relationship with endurance, and it gave Leia a weight that pure heroism could never achieve.

She Earned the Title General

Leia is a princess by birth and a general by choice. The distinction matters. She could have governed Alderaan. She could have served in the senate. She chose the frontline because Leia Organa does not delegate the dangerous work.
