But when Ninigi-no-Mikoto, Amaterasu’s grandson, descended to the earthly realm, Sarutahiko initially refused to bow. He didn’t hide out of shame, but out of pride. He believed himself too mighty to acknowledge a newcomer, even one of celestial descent. So he withdrew, hoping to remain outside the unfolding divine order.
