Sesshomaru is InuYasha's older half-brother, a full-blooded dog demon of extraordinary power, and he despises humans. Sesshomaru does not decide to protect Rin. He does not have a change of heart. She follows him after that, and he allows it, and gradually, without ever acknowledging it, he restructures his entire existence around her safety. Tenseiga Is the Sword He Did Not Want

Sesshomaru's father left him Tenseiga — a sword that cannot kill, only heal and resurrect. Sesshomaru, who values power above all else, considered this an insult. He wanted Tessaiga, the sword of destruction. The irony reveals itself across hundreds of chapters: his father gave him the sword he needed, not the one he wanted. The sword that heals is the one that teaches Sesshomaru compassion, which turns out to be the power he was missing.

His Character Growth Is Invisible

Sesshomaru never makes a speech about becoming a better person. He never has a moment of realization. He simply starts doing things differently — protecting rather than destroying, tolerating rather than executing, allowing himself to be near people he once would have killed on sight. The change is so gradual that readers debate when exactly it happened. That ambiguity is the point. Sesshomaru did not transform. He unfroze. Sesshomaru is on HoloDream. He will not acknowledge that he cares. Watch what he does instead of what he says.
