Sitting Bull’s Vision Before the Battle of the Little Bighorn Foretold Victory — Here’s How It Unfolded

1 min read

Sitting Bull was a Hunkpapa Lakota holy man and leader born around 1831 in what is now South Dakota. He became the most prominent Native American leader of the nineteenth century, uniting the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho in resistance against American expansion into their territory. His leadership led to the most famous Native American military victory in history — the defeat of George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

The Holy Man

Sitting Bull was first and foremost a spiritual leader. He received visions, performed the Sun Dance, and guided his people through the interpretation of sacred signs. Before the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, he performed an extended Sun Dance during which he received a vision of soldiers falling upside down into his camp. His people interpreted this as a prophecy of victory, and they were right.

The Battle of the Little Bighorn

On June 25, 1876, Lieutenant Colonel Custer and the 7th Cavalry attacked a massive encampment of Lakota and Cheyenne along the Little Bighorn River. Custer divided his forces and was overwhelmed. His entire command of over two hundred soldiers was killed. The victory, though decisive, marked the beginning of the end — the U.S. government responded with overwhelming military force, and the free life of the Plains peoples was systematically destroyed.

The Final Years

Sitting Bull fled to Canada for four years before returning and surrendering in 1881. He spent time in a military prison, toured briefly with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, and eventually settled on the Standing Rock Reservation. In 1890, authorities sent Indian police to arrest him, fearing his influence over the Ghost Dance movement. Sitting Bull was shot and killed during the arrest. He was approximately fifty-nine years old.
