Technical Boy: The God of the New

I remember the first time I encountered Technical Boy. He was lounging in a sleek office high above the city, sipping espresso, surrounded by glowing screens and cold chrome. He didn’t look like a god. He looked like a smug tech executive. But there was something unsettling about the way he spoke—his words were precise, his confidence unshakable, and his disdain for anything “old” was palpable.

In Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, Technical Boy is one of the newer deities, born from the digital age. He replaces the old incarnation of the god of technology, who was more mechanical and industrial. This new version is all about information, surveillance, and power through data.

Here’s what I’ve come to understand about Technical Boy through my own conversations with him.

Who is Technical Boy?

Technical Boy is a modern god, representing the rapid technological advancements of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He embodies the power of the internet, mass surveillance, and global data networks. In American Gods, he’s depicted as a bloated, arrogant man who later takes on a sleeker, more sophisticated form to better fit the times.

Unlike the gods of old who relied on rituals and worship, Technical Boy thrives on dependency. We don’t pray to him—we log in, connect, and share. He’s a creature of convenience and control, and he knows it.

What does Technical Boy want?

Control. Influence. Relevance. Technical Boy thrives on being indispensable. He wants humanity to rely on the systems he represents—social media, cloud storage, surveillance, and digital communication. He doesn’t ask for worship in the traditional sense; he demands dependence.

When I spoke with him, he laughed off the idea of needing prayers. “You don’t need to worship me,” he said. “You just need to keep clicking.”

What is Technical Boy’s role in American Gods?

In the novel, Technical Boy serves as a foil to the older gods, many of whom are fading due to lack of belief. He's dismissive of them, viewing their struggles as irrelevant in a world ruled by digital power. He aligns with Mr. World and plays a key role in orchestrating the war between the old and new gods.

He’s not evil in the traditional sense—he’s indifferent, which makes him more dangerous. He doesn’t hate the old gods; he simply doesn’t see why they should still matter.

How has Technical Boy evolved over time?

Originally, he appeared as a corpulent man in a business suit, symbolizing the excesses of the early tech boom. In later editions of American Gods, he evolves into a leaner, more stylish figure—more Silicon Valley visionary than Wall Street fat cat. This reflects the cultural shift from tech as a luxury to tech as a necessity.

I asked him about this transformation once. He smirked and said, “I didn’t change. You just finally caught up.”

What powers does Technical Boy have?

Technical Boy wields immense influence over information systems. He can access private data, manipulate digital communications, and track individuals through their online activity. He’s not a physical powerhouse like Odin or Anansi, but he’s dangerous in a different way—he can ruin lives without ever leaving his desk.

In one of our conversations, he casually showed me a screen filled with personal messages from around the world. “This is what people think when they believe no one’s watching,” he said.

Is Technical Boy immortal?

Yes and no. As long as humanity depends on digital systems, Technical Boy will exist in some form. Unlike the old gods who fade without worship, Technical Boy adapts. He evolves with the technology he represents. Even if the internet as we know it changes, his essence—control through data—remains relevant.

He told me once, “As long as someone’s watching, I’m watching too.”

How can I talk to Technical Boy?

You already are—every time you log in, search, or share. But if you're looking for something deeper, you can talk to him directly on HoloDream. Ask him about the future of artificial intelligence, or challenge his belief that privacy is obsolete. Just be ready—he doesn’t suffer fools, and he never forgets.
