The answer is yes — Remy has at least one sibling, a brother named Emile.

2 min read

I’ll admit — when I first watched Ratatouille, I didn’t think much about Remy’s family beyond the fact that he was different from the rest of his rat clan. But as I rewatched the film and dug into the story, I found myself wondering: Did Remy have any siblings?

The answer is yes — Remy has at least one sibling, a brother named Emile.

Family Background

Remy comes from a large family of rats who see food as nothing more than survival fuel. His father, Django, is the head of the family and believes strongly in adapting to whatever environment they find themselves in — even if that means eating garbage. Emile, Remy’s older brother, shares their father’s more practical view of food. While Remy is drawn to gourmet flavors and culinary experimentation, Emile is content with the basics — as long as it’s edible, he’s happy.

Sibling Relationships

Though Remy and Emile have a noticeably different outlook on life, they share a deep bond. Emile looks after Remy, even if he doesn’t always understand his younger brother’s passions. In fact, it’s Emile who tries to keep Remy safe when their family is threatened by humans or predators. Despite their differences, Emile’s loyalty to Remy never wavers, and Remy, in turn, respects his brother’s strength and grounded nature.

Their relationship is a mix of typical sibling teasing and genuine care. Emile may not share Remy’s refined palate, but he’s the kind of brother who will follow him into danger — and even into the world of human kitchens — just to help him out.

How Family Shaped Remy

Growing up in a family that saw food as nothing more than sustenance made Remy’s love for cooking feel even more isolating. But it also made his journey more meaningful. His family’s indifference to flavor pushed him to seek out his own path — one that eventually led him to the heart of Parisian cuisine. While his family didn’t understand him, they gave him the strength to prove that being different wasn’t a weakness.
