The biggest mistake Osiris made was trusting his brother, Set.

The biggest mistake Osiris made was trusting his brother, Set.

In the grand narrative of Egyptian mythology, Osiris, god of the afterlife and resurrection, is often portrayed as wise and just. Yet, his fatal flaw was his willingness to trust Set, the god of chaos and storms. This misplaced trust led to his downfall — and ultimately, his death.

What led to the betrayal?

According to ancient Egyptian texts like the Pyramid Texts and later accounts from Plutarch, Set grew jealous of Osiris’s rule over Egypt. Osiris had brought civilization, agriculture, and religious order to the people, earning their deep reverence. Set, envious of his brother’s popularity and power, devised a cunning plan. He crafted a beautifully ornate chest — the infamous coffin — tailored precisely to Osiris’s size. At a banquet, Set presented the chest as a gift to whoever could fit inside it. When Osiris lay down in it for sport, Set sealed the lid and cast the chest into the Nile.

What were the consequences?

Osiris’s death marked a profound turning point in Egyptian cosmology. His murder threw the land into chaos and set the stage for a divine conflict between Set and Osiris’s son, Horus. Without Osiris, the balance of Ma’at — cosmic order — was disrupted. Though Osiris was eventually resurrected by his wife, Isis, he could not return to the world of the living. Instead, he became the ruler of the underworld, where he judged the dead and presided over their rebirth.

What does Osiris say about it?

While Osiris himself does not directly "speak" in historical texts, his role in Egyptian religion reflects a lesson in trust and transformation. Temples and rituals honored him as a symbol of renewal and justice beyond death. In later interpretations, his story is less about regret and more about the cyclical nature of life and the inevitability of conflict.

If you could ask Osiris directly, he might remind you that even gods must face betrayal — and that from death comes new beginnings.
