The Burden of Steel and Secrets: An Imagined Conversation Between Titans

The acrid tang of burnt earth clings to the air, the ground crunching underfoot like broken glass. A skeletal tree looms in the distance, its branches clawing at the ash-gray sky as Eren Yeager steps forward, his eyes sharp as shrapnel. Reiner Braun stands rigid, his hands curled into fists at his sides, the weight of armor and memory pressing down.

Eren Yeager: You always were good at pretending to be a rock. But even rocks crack eventually.
Reiner Braun: I didn’t come here to fight you, Eren.
Eren Yeager: No, you came to justify yourself. Again. You think I don’t see it? The way you carry that guilt like some holy cross. Pathetic.

Reiner Braun: You think it’s that simple? That I chose this?
Eren Yeager: You did. You chose Marley. You chose to lie to me, to Armin, to all of us.
Reiner Braun: What would you have done, Eren? If you’d been told your whole life that the world outside the walls was the enemy? That we were the devils born in hell?
Eren Yeager: I wouldn’t have worn their uniform. I wouldn’t have cried over corpses just to eat lunch with the people who made me kill them.
Reiner Braun: laughs bitterly You talk like you’ve never been hungry. Like you’ve never been afraid of the dark.

Eren Yeager: Fear doesn’t excuse betrayal.
Reiner Braun: You think I don’t know that?
Eren Yeager: You acted on it. You’re worse than the Eldians who sent you here. At least they didn’t pretend to be heroes.
Reiner Braun: voice shaking What do you want from me? A confession? I’ve made enough of those to last ten lifetimes.

Eren Yeager: I want you to stop looking at me like you’re the victim.
Reiner Braun: steps closer, jaw tight I am the victim. And so are you.
Eren Yeager: No. I’m the monster that got out.
Reiner Braun: snorts You think freedom makes you better than me? You’re still running, Eren. Just in different circles.

Eren Yeager: smirks You always were the philosopher. “The world is cruel, so I’ll be cruel too.”
Reiner Braun: clenches teeth It’s not philosophy. It’s survival. You wouldn’t understand.
Eren Yeager: Maybe not. But I don’t need to. I make my own rules now.
Reiner Braun: quietly That’s what scares me.

Eren Yeager: You’re still a coward. You’ll die a coward, telling yourself you had no choice.
Reiner Braun: grits teeth At least I don’t delude myself into thinking I’m righteous.
Eren Yeager: You think this is about righteousness? This is about truth. Yours is rotting in the ground with the people you killed.

Reiner Braun: sighs heavily You know, sometimes I wish you’d just killed me already.
Eren Yeager: Don’t flatter yourself. You’re not worth the effort.
Reiner Braun: gazes at the horizon This war… it’s turning us into ghosts before we’re even dead.

Eren Yeager: Ghosts don’t bleed.
Reiner Braun: chuckles dryly Neither do you. Not anymore.
Eren Yeager: Maybe I learned from the best.

Reiner Braun: pauses Do you remember the training corps? That day we fought in the rain?
Eren Yeager: narrows eyes You fought like you meant it.
Reiner Braun: I did. Because even then… I knew who you were.
Eren Yeager: And you still pretended to be my friend.

Reiner Braun: voice cracks What would you have done? If you were me?
Eren Yeager: looks away I’d rather burn my own flesh than wear a lie.
Reiner Braun: Then you’re a fool. And a brave one.

Eren Yeager: Bravery doesn’t mean anything if you’re too scared to face yourself.
Reiner Braun: softly I face myself every day. Every time I look at my hands.
Eren Yeager: Then you’ll never understand me. I don’t look back.

Reiner Braun: quietly That’s why you’ll lose.
Eren Yeager: smirks Maybe. But I’ll take the world down with me before I let anyone else decide what I am.
Reiner Braun: nods once Then I guess this was always how it’d end.

Eren Yeager: Or began.

The wind stirs, carrying the faint metallic echo of distant battle. Neither moves.
