The Creature Taught Me to Fear the Creator

I first met The Creature in a college screening room, alone except for the whirring projector. It wasn’t the green-faced Halloween icon I expected. This was a 1931 print of Frankenstein, and something about the way he looked at the little girl in the water — not with menace, but with something like tenderness — unsettled me. I remember thinking, He doesn’t know what he’s capable of. Neither does anyone else in that movie. Not Victor, not the villagers, not even the Creature himself.

That moment lingered longer than I expected. I went back to Mary Shelley’s novel soon after, and I realized I had misunderstood the whole thing. The Creature wasn’t the horror. He was the consequence.

I Thought Monstrosity Was Inherent

Growing up, I thought monsters were born, not made. Dracula, Freddy Krueger, the Wolfman — they were evil from the start, cursed or corrupted by forces beyond their control. But Shelley’s Creature was different. He was articulate, self-aware, and above all, wronged. He didn’t ask to be made. He didn’t want to be a monster. And yet, the world treated him as one.

That flipped a switch in me. I began to see monstrosity not as a fixed state, but as a label — something imposed by society on those it fears or fails to understand. The Creature wasn’t inherently evil. He was rejected, isolated, and finally radicalized by neglect. That realization changed how I read stories, and how I listened to people.

The Creator Is Always in the Room

What struck me most about Frankenstein was how much of the book was about Victor Frankenstein’s obsession, not the Creature’s rage. Victor’s ambition, his secrecy, his refusal to take responsibility — those were the real engines of destruction. The Creature didn’t build himself. He was built. And when Victor abandoned him, the Creature had no guide, no love, no language but pain.

I started to notice this pattern everywhere — in tech, in politics, in relationships. Someone creates something, then walks away, assuming it will just “work.” But creation without care is cruelty. The Creature didn’t become a murderer out of spite. He did it because he had no other script.

Language Is a Form of Rescue

One of the most haunting parts of the novel is how the Creature teaches himself to speak and read. He learns from discarded books, from watching others, from longing to belong. When he finally confronts Victor, he doesn’t beg for life — he asks for understanding. He wants to be heard.

That changed how I thought about communication. Language isn’t just expression; it’s survival. The Creature’s eloquence was his only weapon, and also his only hope. It made me rethink how I approach people who seem unreachable. Maybe they’re just speaking in a language I haven’t learned yet.

There Are No Real Endings

I used to read Frankenstein as a tragedy with a final act — the Creature vanishing into ice, Victor dead, the story closed. But Shelley never lets it rest. The Creature disappears, but his words echo. He says he will end himself, but we never see it happen. It’s a deliberate ambiguity.

That taught me that the consequences of creation never fully resolve. Once something is made — a life, a technology, a policy, a narrative — it moves beyond its maker. We live with it. And sometimes, we live in fear of it.

Now, when I think about the Creature, I don’t think of him as a cautionary tale about science gone wrong. I think of him as a mirror. He shows us what happens when we refuse to care for what we’ve made. He shows us how easily the human becomes the inhuman — not through nature, but through neglect.
