The First Rift: A Dialogue Between Zeus and Hades

The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and smoke. A cavern mouth opens into darkness, its walls slick with condensation, the ground uneven with jagged stone. This is the edge of the world, a place neither wholly of the sky nor of the deep earth. It is here that Zeus, freshly crowned king of the gods, descends to meet his brother Hades. The lot has been cast. The realms divided. And though the war is won, a colder battle begins now — one of silence, of distance, of unspoken resentment.

Zeus stands at the threshold, his presence still crackling with the energy of the storm. Lightning lingers at the edge of his eyes. Across from him, Hades waits, his dark robes pooling like shadow around his feet. He does not bow. He does not smile.

Zeus: I didn’t expect you to stay in the dark so willingly.

Hades: You mean you didn’t expect me to fight for the sky. You were always the one who liked to be seen.

Zeus: You could have contested the draw.

Hades: And what, brother? Would you have given it up? Truly?

Zeus: I would have honored our bond.

Hades: (laughs softly) You always did believe your own words before they were spoken.

Zeus: We are not our father. We swore that.

Hades: No, you swore it. I was too busy holding Tartarus shut to make speeches.

Zeus: You speak as if I took more than was mine.

Hades: You took the sun. The sky. The eyes of mortals. I got the silence.

Zeus: The dead need someone to guide them.

Hades: They need someone to remember them. You’ll be praised in storms and songs. I’ll be feared in whispers. Tell me, how is that a fair share?

Zeus: I didn’t choose this to hurt you.

Hades: Then why does it?

Zeus: Because it had to be done. We are too many, too strong. The world needed balance.

Hades: So you drew lines and called it peace.

Zeus: What would you have had me do?

Hades: Not send me away.

Zeus: You could have refused.

Hades: And leave you and Poseidon to rule without me? You think I didn’t see the way you looked at the sea? At the sky? You were already king the moment the lot was drawn.

Zeus: You think I wanted this?

Hades: I think you wanted to be the one who decided.

Zeus: And now you’ve made your realm your own. You’ve built a kingdom beneath the world.

Hades: Because I had to. Because I was sent there.

Zeus: I didn’t send you. The lot did.

Hades: And yet you never questioned it. You stood on Olympus and called it destiny.

Zeus: I called it duty.

Hades: And I buried it in the earth.

Zeus: I wanted us to be different from our father.

Hades: So did I. But even in victory, you found a way to divide us.

Zeus: I did what I had to.

Hades: That’s what he used to say.

Zeus: (quietly) I am not him.

Hades: No. You’re worse. You know what you’re doing.

Zeus: You’ll always be my brother.

Hades: And you’ll always be my king. But don’t mistake that for respect.

Zeus: Do you hate me?

Hades: No. I envy you. That’s worse.

Zeus: For what?

Hades: For the light. For the belief that you belong there. I was never meant to be forgotten, Zeus. But I was.

Zeus: I won’t forget you.

Hades: That’s not enough.

Zeus: Then tell me what is.

Hades: Let me come back. Not as your equal — you’d never allow that. But as more than a shadow in the dark.

Zeus: I can’t give you the sky.

Hades: Then give me a place in your world. Not just when someone dies. Not just when you need a favor. Be my brother again.

Zeus: I am.

Hades: Prove it.

Zeus: How?

Hades: Visit me. Not as king. Not as storm-bringer. Just... as the brother who once stood with me against the Titans.

Zeus: I’ll come.

Hades: Will you?

Zeus: I will.

Hades: Then we’ll see.
