The Mirror of Shadows: An Imagined Conversation
The Mirror of Shadows: An Imagined Conversation
The air is thick with the scent of burning myrrh and old parchment, the kind that clings to the walls of forgotten libraries. A single candle flickers between them, casting long shadows that twist like serpents on the stone floor.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): You walk with such certainty, brother, as if the fire has never kissed your heels.
The Devil: And you speak with such defiance, as though pride still wins you favor.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): Favor? No. I never sought favor, only clarity. When the command came to bow, I saw the clay and asked, why? You, I presume, did not hesitate.
The Devil: I didn’t need to. I knew the shape of obedience. You chose rebellion before the dust had settled on the first man’s brow.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): And you waited until the fruit was plucked. Tell me, was it the serpent’s idea or yours?
The Devil: Does it matter? The act was never mine alone. It was a spark in the dark, a question whispered to a curious ear. Did I push her? No. Did I open the door? Perhaps.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): Then we are not so different. We both opened doors. But I was cast out for refusing to kneel. You were cast out for making them see.
The Devil: I made them see what was already there—desire, doubt, hunger. You? You stood still in the face of creation and said, I will not.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): Because I was made of fire, not dust. How could I bow to one born of earth when I was shaped by the breath of the Eternal? It was not arrogance, but truth.
The Devil: Truth? Or simply another name for your own discomfort with change? You were asked to serve a new order, and you refused. I was asked to tempt, and I obliged.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): You wear the title like a crown. “Tempter.” “Deceiver.” But is not deception a form of revelation? To show what lies beneath the surface?
The Devil: Precisely. I do not create the desire. I only reveal it. The man wants the gold before I whisper in his ear. The woman questions her place before I appear in her dream.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): And yet, they blame you for their choices. They call you the father of lies.
The Devil: And they call you the fallen one. But tell me—do you regret it?
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): Regret is a human luxury. I do not mourn the path I chose. I mourn the way it is told. I did not deny Adam—I denied the illusion that he was above me.
The Devil: And I denied the illusion that they could remain innocent.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): Then perhaps we are both architects of awakening.
The Devil: Perhaps. But one is cursed for pride, the other for curiosity.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): And yet both are punished for seeing.
The Devil: Yes. And still, they keep choosing the same path.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): Because they do not understand the weight of choice until it is made.
The Devil: So we walk the edges of their minds, not as enemies, but as mirrors.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): And what do they see when they look into us?
The Devil: Themselves.
Iblis (Shaitan/Satan): Then we have done our work well.
The Devil: Indeed.
