The Self-Care Industry Is Selling You Avoidance Disguised as Healing
When Self-Care Becomes the Problem
The self-care industry generated an estimated $450 billion globally in 2023. The category includes skincare routines, spa days, sound baths, supplements, journaling prompts, nervous system reset practices, and a broad range of products and experiences sold on the premise that they help you feel better. Some of them do. But the industry has also developed a vocabulary that makes avoidance look like healing, and the distinction is worth being able to make. Avoidance is one of the most effective short-term mood regulation strategies available. Withdrawing from a stressful situation, postponing a difficult conversation, spending an evening doing something pleasant instead of something hard — these reliably reduce distress in the moment. The problem is that most of the things worth avoiding don't go away. They wait. And the relief that avoidance provides is negatively reinforcing, which means the more you use it, the more you return to it.
What Avoidance Looks Like in Wellness Packaging
The difference between rest and avoidance is harder to see from the outside than the wellness content suggests. Rest is responsive to an actual deficit — depleted energy, disrupted sleep, extended periods of output without recovery. Avoidance is a response to anxiety, discomfort, or anticipated negative experience. The behavior can look identical: both might involve a bath, a canceled plan, a quiet evening at home. The distinguishing factor is what you're actually responding to. Research from the University of Michigan's affective science lab found that people who used experiential avoidance — strategies designed to prevent contact with uncomfortable internal experiences — showed higher rates of depression and anxiety over time, not lower. The research consistently shows that the attempt to avoid distress maintains and often amplifies it, because the avoided experience doesn't process and the anxiety about encountering it grows. This is relevant to self-care because a significant portion of what's marketed under that label functions as a scaffolding for avoidance. A "rest day" when you're exhausted is recovery. A "rest day" every time work feels difficult, a relationship needs a hard conversation, or a goal requires uncomfortable effort is a pattern worth examining.
The Industry's Investment in Dysregulation
There's a structural point worth making about self-care as an industry. Industries persist by generating repeat purchasing. A self-care industry that successfully resolved the distress it addresses would lose customers. The model is better served by products and practices that provide temporary relief — enough to feel like they're working — without producing the kind of genuine change that reduces the need for them. This isn't a conspiracy. It's a market dynamic. But it's worth noticing that the most evidence-based approaches to psychological distress — approaches that involve tolerating discomfort, engaging with feared situations, and building skills through challenge rather than comfort — don't generate much product revenue. They're not easily sold as self-care. Research from the London School of Economics examining the relationship between consumer wellbeing spending and reported wellbeing found that people who spent more on wellbeing products reported higher wellbeing in the short term but showed no difference in stable measures of life satisfaction and psychological functioning compared to those who spent less. The effect appeared to be in the expectation and ritual rather than in any lasting change.
The Tangent Worth Taking
The expansion of self-care rhetoric tracks closely with the erosion of structural supports — labor protections, affordable healthcare, paid leave, community infrastructure — that used to distribute the burden of well-being more broadly. When those systems erode, the responsibility for managing stress and maintaining health shifts to the individual. Self-care becomes both a genuine coping necessity and an ideological cover for that shift. Telling people to practice better self-care in a context where the conditions producing distress are structural and unchanged is a different kind of intervention than it appears.
What Genuine Recovery Looks Like
Real recovery from sustained stress involves actual rest, but also reentry — returning to the things that were stressful with greater capacity and a clearer perspective. It involves processing the experience, not just escaping it. It involves addressing the source of the depletion when possible, not just repeatedly soothing the symptoms. The useful question to ask about any self-care practice isn't whether it feels good in the moment. It's whether, over time, it's building your capacity to engage with the parts of your life that are hard. If the practices that are ostensibly restoring you are also keeping you away from that engagement indefinitely, the practices deserve a second look.
