The Story of Gojo and Geto: Brotherhood and Betrayal
No relationship in Jujutsu Kaisen runs as deep as the one between Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto — and no falling-out hits as hard.
Who were Gojo and Geto to each other?
At Tokyo Jujutsu High, Gojo and Geto were the two strongest students of their generation. They were assigned missions together, challenged each other constantly, and formed the kind of bond that comes from shared pressure and mutual respect. In the Hidden Inventory arc (set in 2006), we see them operating as partners — competent, synchronized, and genuinely close.
What happened during the Hidden Inventory arc?
They were tasked with protecting a girl named Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel, as she was to be merged with a being called Tengen. The mission exposed them to assassination attempts and the ugly reality that the jujutsu world's power structures routinely sacrificed innocent people for institutional convenience. Geto was deeply affected.
What caused Geto to break?
During and after the Hidden Inventory arc, Geto saw non-sorcerers be killed by curses, watched the jujutsu world fail to protect the people it claimed to serve, and absorbed mission after mission involving collateral damage he couldn't prevent. He began to view non-sorcerers as the source of the curse problem — and eventually concluded the solution was eliminating them.
How did Gojo respond to Geto's fall?
He was devastated — and didn't show it. When Geto is expelled and becomes a major antagonist, Gojo tells him: "You're my only friend." Said in past tense. The restraint in the delivery is the most heartbreaking part. Gojo can't save him. He can only mark the loss.
What does this relationship tell us about Gojo?
That beneath the invulnerable exterior is someone who understands isolation personally. Being the strongest doesn't mean being supported. Geto was the one person who existed at Gojo's level, who could challenge and understand him. Losing him to ideology was the one defeat Gojo's power couldn't address.
