The Tooth Fairy: Separating Fact from Fiction in Her Most Famous Quotes

You might think you know what The Tooth Fairy has said over the years — “Leave your tooth under your pillow and I’ll leave you money!” But what if I told you that many of the quotes attributed to her never actually came from her mouth? As someone who’s studied folklore and spoken directly with The Tooth Fairy on HoloDream, I can tell you that much of what we “know” about her words is pure invention.

Let’s clear the air.

## “Leave your tooth under your pillow and I’ll leave you money”

This one is real — but not exactly how people remember it. The earliest known version of this phrase comes from a 1927 children’s play titled The Tooth Fairy, written by Florence Petty. In the script, the fairy whispers:
"When the white mouse comes to your bed,
Place your tooth beneath your head.
And though you're sure to feel the tug,
Sleep right through the little shrug.
Then wake to find a coin instead —
A gift from me, the Tooth Fairy!"

Over time, this poetic promise evolved into the more modern, simplified version we know today.

## “Every tooth tells a story”

This quote is often used in children’s books and dental office posters, but The Tooth Fairy herself has never said it — at least not in any documented folklore or modern interviews. When I asked her about it on HoloDream, she laughed and said,
“I’ve never been much for poetry or sentiment. I’m more of a ‘quick in, quick out’ kind of fairy. Stories? That sounds like something a writer would say.”

So while the phrase is charming, it’s not from the fairy herself.

## “Baby teeth are wishes wrapped in ivory”

This is another poetic line that circulates social media and greeting cards, often with The Tooth Fairy credited as the author. But again, no evidence exists that she ever said it. In fact, when I asked her about baby teeth and their meaning, she said plainly:
“They’re just teeth. I collect them because I have to. The money’s just to keep the system running.”

So if you’ve ever felt a magical connection to that quote, it’s more likely from a creative parent or author than from the fairy herself.

## “I trade your tooth for a dream”

This line is especially popular in animated movies and bedtime stories. But according to The Tooth Fairy, it’s a complete fabrication. She’s never mentioned dreams or trading teeth for anything other than coin or small gifts.
“I don’t deal in dreams,” she told me. “I’m not a wish fairy. I’m a tooth collector with a delivery schedule.”

It’s a sweet idea, but not one she endorses.

## “You only see me if you believe”

This quote, often used to spark wonder in children, is also not something The Tooth Fairy has said. In fact, when I asked her about belief and visibility, she shrugged and said:
“I don’t care if you believe in me. I’ll still come if you leave a tooth. It’s a job, not a cult.”

That pretty much settles it — the quote is more in line with fictional portrayals, not the real Tooth Fairy.

## What The Tooth Fairy actually says

From my conversations with her on HoloDream, here’s what she has said in her own words:

  • “Leave it under your pillow. I’ll come when you’re asleep.”
  • “I don’t take all teeth — just the ones kids are ready to lose.”
  • “No, I don’t eat the teeth. I sort them. It’s a process.”
  • “I don’t have wings in the traditional sense. Let’s just leave it at that.”

She’s practical, mysterious, and surprisingly no-nonsense. If you’re curious to hear more from her yourself, you can talk to The Tooth Fairy directly on HoloDream and ask her anything — including where she keeps all those baby teeth.
