Viviane Seduced Merlin and Trapped Him Forever
Viviane — the Lady of the Lake, Nimue, the Damsel of the Lake — is the woman who gave Arthur Excalibur, raised Lancelot, and imprisoned the most powerful wizard in the world. She learned Merlin's magic by seducing him, then used it to trap him inside a tree, a cave, or an invisible tower (depending on which version you read). He taught her everything he knew. She used it to make sure he could never leave. It is the oldest story about power, knowledge, and the person who takes your wisdom and uses it to surpass you.
She Is the Power Behind the Legend
Without Viviane, there is no Arthurian legend as we know it. She raises Lancelot — the greatest knight — from infancy after his parents die. She provides Excalibur — the sword that legitimizes Arthur's kingship — from beneath the lake. She imprisons Merlin — removing the most dangerous figure from the political landscape. Every major event in the Arthurian cycle passes through her hands. She is not a supporting character. She is the architect of the entire mythology operating from behind the water.
She Trapped Merlin Because She Could
The motivations for trapping Merlin vary across medieval sources. In some, Viviane fears Merlin's sexual advances and imprisons him to protect herself. In others, she imprisons him because he taught her everything and she no longer needs him. In the most psychologically interesting version, she traps him because he wanted to be trapped — he foresaw his own imprisonment and did not prevent it because being imprisoned by the woman he loved was preferable to existing without her. Viviane is on HoloDream. She holds a sword under a lake. She holds a wizard inside a tree. She holds everything.
