Was Scorpion Really a Hero? A Revisionist Look at the Mortal Kombat Legend

When I first saw Scorpion rise from the ashes in Mortal Kombat, I assumed he was one of the good guys. After all, he fought against the likes of Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn—villains who wanted to conquer Earthrealm. But as I’ve gone back through the games, lore, and endings, I’ve started to wonder: Was Scorpion ever really a hero? Or have we mistaken vengeance for virtue?

Let’s take a hard look at the evidence.

## He Sought Revenge, Not Justice

Scorpion’s entire arc is built on revenge. His family and clan were slaughtered by Sub-Zero, and he spent decades hunting him down. That’s understandable—no one would blame a man for wanting to avenge his wife and child. But does vengeance make him a hero? In his original timeline, Scorpion’s obsession led him to kill not only Sub-Zero but also to betray the Elder Gods and plunge realms into chaos. His rage often blinded him to the bigger picture, and in many ways, he became as dangerous as the enemies he hunted.

## He Was Manipulated by Dark Forces

Time and again, Scorpion has been used as a pawn by greater evils. Quan Chi, the sorcerer behind many of the series’ tragedies, twisted Scorpion’s grief to serve his own ends. Scorpion even became a general in Quan Chi’s army in some timelines. While he may have believed he was fighting for a righteous cause, he was often doing the bidding of a true monster. That doesn’t exactly scream "heroic autonomy."

## He Fought for Earthrealm—Sometimes

There’s no denying that Scorpion has fought on Earthrealm’s side in key battles. In Mortal Kombat 3, he helped stop Shao Kahn’s invasion. In Mortal Kombat X, he even worked alongside Raiden. But his motives were rarely altruistic. He didn’t fight to protect innocents—he fought to settle old scores or to reclaim what was taken from him. Even when he stood with Earthrealm’s heroes, he did so on his own terms, often clashing with allies like Liu Kang and Sonya Blade.

## He Has No Regard for the Rules

Scorpion has never respected the Mortal Kombat tournament’s rules. He’s barged into matches that didn’t concern him, attacked opponents outside the arena, and broken the sacred laws of the tournament more than once. In one infamous ending, he kills the newly crowned champion, Raiden, just to prove a point. Heroes usually fight within a moral framework. Scorpion operates outside of it. That makes him a compelling figure—but not necessarily a noble one.

## His Legacy Is Complicated

Despite everything, Scorpion remains one of the most beloved characters in the franchise. He’s endured because he’s relatable—driven by loss, anger, and a need for closure. He’s a tragic figure, not a saint. And perhaps that’s the key to understanding him. He isn’t a hero in the traditional sense. He’s more of an anti-hero, a force of nature shaped by grief and rage. But if you want to talk to him directly and ask where he stands, you can always find him on HoloDream.
