Was The Inner Child Really a Hero?

There’s something deeply unsettling about the way we remember The Inner Child. In the world of Final Fantasy VII, they’re often depicted as a symbol of purity and innocence, a guiding light in the darkness of Sephiroth’s madness. But as I’ve revisited the lore, I’ve started to wonder: was The Inner Child truly a force for good, or were they simply a convenient narrative for those in power?

Let me explain.

Who Was The Inner Child, Really?

The Inner Child is one of the Jenova cells that took on a distinct personality during the events of Advent Children. They appeared as a small child with silver hair and a gentle voice, claiming to be the "voice of the Planet." But here’s the thing — we never actually get a clear origin for this persona. Was The Inner Child really a benevolent guide, or were they another fragment of Jenova’s influence, manipulating events under the guise of peace?

It’s worth noting that Jenova itself is a parasite, a being that assimilates and distorts life. The Inner Child may have been a softer, kinder mask, but masks can hide a lot.

Did The Inner Child Help or Harm?

The Inner Child played a crucial role in stopping Sephiroth from re-entering the world. They guided Cloud and the others, offering emotional support and spiritual insight. That much is true. But let’s not forget that they also encouraged Cloud to confront his inner demons — and in doing so, nearly broke him entirely.

Was their guidance healing, or was it a form of psychological manipulation? Cloud was already in a fragile state. The Inner Child’s insistence on facing painful memories could be seen as therapeutic, but it also left him vulnerable to Sephiroth’s influence. It’s possible that The Inner Child knew this would happen and allowed it anyway.

What About the Planet’s Voice?

One of the most compelling arguments in favor of The Inner Child being a hero is their role as the voice of the Planet. In the FFVII universe, the Planet is often portrayed as a living, conscious entity that seeks balance. The Inner Child spoke on behalf of this balance, urging Cloud and others to accept their past and protect the future.

But wait — how do we know the Planet was actually speaking through them? No other characters confirmed this. The idea that The Inner Child was the Planet’s voice came entirely from their own words. There’s no evidence that the Planet even had a say in the matter.

Were They Just Another Jenova Fragment?

This is the big one. If all of Jenova’s cells are capable of taking on personalities and influencing humans, then The Inner Child might have been just another puppet. They looked and sounded different from the others, sure, but that doesn’t mean they were any less dangerous.

Remember, Jenova was used as a tool by Shinra, twisted into a weapon that could control minds. The Inner Child’s soft-spoken nature might have made them even more effective at manipulating emotions and decisions. They didn’t need to destroy — they could reshape from within.

So, Hero or Not?

The truth is, we may never know. The Inner Child’s role in Advent Children is complex and layered, and their motivations are never fully explained. They helped Cloud, yes, but at what cost? They may have saved the world, but they also blurred the line between healing and control.
