What Gandalf Taught Us About The Hero's Journey

3 min read

I never set out to teach heroes how to walk their paths.

Yet time and again, I found myself nudging small folk toward great destinies—none more than Frodo Baggins. The true journey was never the one marked on maps, but the one etched into the heart.

What did Gandalf teach about the hero's journey?

The road itself is less important than the choices made upon it. When Frodo despaired about the burden he carried, I reminded him that none could know the shape of their story until its final chapter. "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us," I told him. The journey is not about prophecy or fate—it is about action.

What is the most important lesson Gandalf emphasizes?

That courage and hope can exist even in the darkest places. I once told Frodo, "In the dark, unreliable as ever, we have found ourselves on the very threshold of destruction, and the light beyond is the same as the light within." Heroes must carry that light, even when their own strength wavers.

How do small characters fit into grand stories?

The smallest hands can turn the tides of fate. When Bilbo stood before Smaug, or Frodo embarked on his quest, many scoffed at their chances. But it is not might that defines a hero—it is their willingness to act. As I told Frodo, "Such courage from such small folk."

What did Gandalf say about darkness and hope?

Hope is a blade that cuts deeper than any sword. When the Shadow grew in the East, I spoke to Frodo about the light that exists beyond the dark. "There is some good in this world yet," I said, "and it’s worth fighting for." That belief is the fire that keeps the Shadow at bay.

How should one approach the unknown?

With wonder, not fear. When Frodo asked me what lay ahead, I recited the old rhyme: "The Road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began." The path is meant to be walked, not mapped. Trust in the journey itself.

If you’d like to discuss the nature of courage, or even learn more about the pigeons that keep me informed, you’ll find I’m always eager for conversation. Seek me at the Grey Havens, and let us walk a few paces together.
