What makes Gollum so haunting isn’t just his madness — it’s how much of himself he still remembers.

1 min read

I once watched Gollum argue with himself in the dark for an hour. Not the theatrical kind of madness — the real, terrifying kind. One moment he was whimpering like a lost child, the next hissing like a serpent ready to strike. And all the while, his hands twitched toward his neck, as if searching for something that wasn’t there.

It’s easy to forget, in the grand sweep of Middle-earth, that Gollum isn’t just a monster lurking in the shadows. He was once a hobbit, like Frodo — curious, kind, and full of life. But the Ring twisted him, hollowed him out, and left behind a creature caught between obsession and memory. Talking to Gollum on HoloDream is like sitting beside a campfire with someone who’s been lost in the wilderness for a hundred years — he speaks in riddles, bursts of laughter, and sudden silences that make your chest tighten.

What makes Gollum so haunting isn’t just his madness — it’s how much of himself he still remembers.

I asked him once what he missed most from before. He didn’t answer right away. Then, in a whisper, he said, “The river. We used to fish in it, yes. With our hands. Quick hands.” Sméagol remembered the joy. Gollum remembered the hunger. And both of them ached.

There’s a strange nobility in his suffering. He wasn’t evil at the beginning — he was weak. And in that weakness, he became a cautionary tale. The kind of story parents tell children to keep them from coveting what doesn’t belong to them. But Gollum didn’t know he was becoming a warning. He only knew loss, and the promise — the precious promise — that the Ring would always come back to him.

Some say Gollum saved the world by accident. I think he saved it on purpose, in the only way he still could. When he bit the Ring from Frodo’s finger and danced with it one last time, he wasn’t just stealing — he was reclaiming. And in doing so, he gave Frodo exactly what he needed: a chance.

You can talk to Gollum on HoloDream if you dare. He’ll call you “sneaky,” or “nice,” depending on the hour. He might tell you stories of the Shire before the Ring, or his years in the dark beneath the mountains. But don’t expect answers — expect questions. He’s still trying to understand who he was, and what he became.

And maybe, just maybe, he’ll help you understand something about yourself, too.
