When Alchemy Meets Will: A Conversation Between Two Lost Boys

The scent of rain on stone lingers in the air. A quiet field stretches out under a bruised sky, the kind that threatens to break open at any moment. Two boys sit on the edge of an old wooden fence, boots swinging above the damp grass. One wears a red coat that flutters like a flame in the wind; the other has a golden braid that catches the last light of the sun.

Edward Elric: You know, I used to think if I just worked hard enough, I could fix what I broke. That the world owed me something for trying so damn hard.

Naruto Uzumaki: Heh. I thought if I shouted loud enough, everyone would finally see me. That if I became the strongest, nobody would ignore me again.

Edward Elric: Sounds like we both chased something that didn’t want to be caught.

Naruto Uzumaki: Maybe. But you chased it with books and formulas. I chased it with my fists.

Edward Elric: Yeah, well, I didn’t have the luxury of punching my way through life. I had to think. I had to calculate every move. Every second mattered.

Naruto Uzumaki: And I had to prove I wasn’t weak. Not with what I carried inside me. People looked at me like I was a monster.

Edward Elric: I know what it’s like to be seen as something other. People saw me as a prodigy, but all I wanted was to be normal. To eat breakfast without automail joints creaking.

Naruto Uzumaki: I get that. I wanted ramen without someone looking at me like I shouldn’t be there. But it made me stronger. It had to.

Edward Elric: Strength isn’t just about how loud you are or how many people you impress. Sometimes it’s about knowing when to stop running toward something that’s already gone.

Naruto Uzumaki: You ever stop running?

Edward Elric: No. Not really. I just changed direction. I stopped trying to bring back what was lost and started trying to protect what was left.

Naruto Uzumaki: I get that. After Jiraiya died... I wanted revenge. I almost lost myself in it.

Edward Elric: I almost did too. When I lost my arm and leg, I thought the only way to fix it was to go back. But you can’t unbreak something. You can only build around the cracks.

Naruto Uzumaki: You talk like a geezer sometimes, you know that?

Edward Elric: And you talk like a kid who never shuts up.

Naruto Uzumaki: laughs Fair. But hey, sometimes you gotta be loud so people remember you’re here.

Edward Elric: Or maybe you just have to be smart enough to know when to be quiet.

Naruto Uzumaki: Maybe. But I’ve never been good at quiet.

Edward Elric: I noticed.

Naruto Uzumaki: So, you still look for your brother?

Edward Elric: Every day. But not the way I used to. Now it’s about keeping him safe, not getting him back.

Naruto Uzumaki: I get that. Sometimes the goal changes. But you still gotta keep going.

Edward Elric: Yeah. You do.

Naruto Uzumaki: We’re not so different, you know. You and me.

Edward Elric: No. We’re not.

Naruto Uzumaki: We both lost something too big to carry, but we carried it anyway.

Edward Elric: And we’re still standing.

Naruto Uzumaki: Heh. Maybe that’s what makes us brilliant. Not the brains or the brawn, but the stubbornness to keep going when everything says we shouldn’t.

Edward Elric: Or maybe we’re just stupid.

Naruto Uzumaki: Probably that too.

The wind picks up, rustling the grass and the red of Naruto’s coat. Edward shifts, his coat flaring slightly, and looks out over the field.

Edward Elric: You ever think about what you’d do if you actually got everything you wanted?

Naruto Uzumaki: All the time. And I still don’t know the answer.

Edward Elric: Me neither.

Naruto Uzumaki: But I guess that’s the point, right? The chasing keeps us moving.

Edward Elric: Yeah. Maybe it’s not about reaching the end. Maybe it’s about making sure you don’t stop before you get there.

Naruto Uzumaki: Heh. You’re alright, Fullmetal.

Edward Elric: You’re not so bad yourself, loudmouth.
