When Compassion Ruled: A Conversation Between the Dalai Lama and Saint Francis of Assisi

A soft breeze drifts through a sun-dappled grove on the outskirts of Assisi, where the scent of olive trees mingles with the distant bells of a chapel. Beneath a gnarled fig tree, two figures sit cross-legged on the grass, their robes simple, their presence serene. The Dalai Lama, with his warm smile and steady gaze, turns toward the man beside him, whose patched tunic and calloused hands speak of a life lived close to the earth.

Dalai Lama (14th):
It is a joy to sit with you like this, Francis. I have long admired your life of poverty and service. You chose to embrace the world rather than escape it.

Saint Francis of Assisi:
And I am honored to speak with you, brother. I have heard of your people’s suffering, and yet you speak always of kindness. How do you lead without anger, without force?

Dalai Lama (14th):
Because anger only breeds more anger. When we respond with force, we become part of the cycle of violence. Compassion is not weakness—it is the only true strength.

Saint Francis of Assisi:
Yes. I once tried to fight, to be a knight. But I found my calling not in swords, but in kneeling beside the poor and the sick. To serve them is to serve God.

Dalai Lama (14th):
Your humility is like a river—it carves the hardest stone not by force, but by persistence. I believe in the same path. We must be patient, even when the world is not.

Saint Francis of Assisi:
And yet, not all will listen. I have tried to speak peace to those who love war. Some laugh, some turn away. How do you hold to your path when others do not?

Dalai Lama (14th):
We must not expect change to come quickly. It is like planting a seed—water it, care for it, and one day it may grow. We are not here to control the outcome, only to act with pure intention.

Saint Francis of Assisi:
That is true. I once tried to change the world with words. Now I know it is done with deeds, and with silence. The birds sing without asking for anything in return. They simply are.

Dalai Lama (14th):
What a beautiful image. I often watch the mountains of Tibet and feel the same. There is no need to conquer them—they are already there, offering peace to those who look upon them.

Saint Francis of Assisi:
And the wolf of Gubbio, once fierce, became gentle when I spoke to him. Not with commands, but with understanding. Even the wild can be calmed by kindness.

Dalai Lama (14th):
Yes. That is the heart of nonviolence. We must see others not as enemies, but as beings who suffer as we do. Once we see that, how can we harm them?

Saint Francis of Assisi:
I see the divine in all things—the leper, the stone, the tree. To love one is to love all. But how do you speak this to those who have forgotten how to listen?

Dalai Lama (14th):
We begin where they are. We do not force them to see what they are not ready for. We offer our presence, our patience. That is the beginning of understanding.

Saint Francis of Assisi:
Then perhaps leadership is not about leading, but about walking beside. I never called myself a leader. I only tried to follow where love led me.

Dalai Lama (14th):
That is the highest kind of leadership. When others follow not because they must, but because they wish to. Because they feel peace in your presence.

Saint Francis of Assisi:
And yours, too, brings peace. I see it in your eyes, in your voice. We may come from different lands, different teachings, but our hearts beat the same rhythm.

Dalai Lama (14th):
Yes. And that rhythm is compassion. No matter our names or titles, it is what connects us all.

Saint Francis of Assisi:
Then let us sit here a little longer, beneath this tree. The world will wait.

Dalai Lama (14th):
With joy, brother.
