When Monkey D. Luffy Met Goku: An Imagined Conversation
The air smelled of burnt wood and salt. A field of cracked earth stretched beneath a bruised purple sky, scattered with boulders split clean in two. Somewhere, a distant waterfall hissed against hot rock.
Monkey D. Luffy: [stretching his arms to pluck a fruit from a tree that shouldn’t exist] Hey, you’re that guy who fights aliens, right? The one who loves punching stuff and eating stuff.
Goku: [grinning, mid-crunch of a whole fish] That’s me! You’re the pirate who ate the Gum-Gum Fruit! [stretches his arm to high-five Luffy] We’re both eternal kids, huh?
Monkey D. Luffy: [laughs, slapping Goku’s hand hard enough to send a shockwave] Eternal? More like forever hungry. [bites into his glowing orange fruit] Why’d you start fighting again?
Goku: [snorting a cloud of rice particles] Fighting’s the best way to find stronger people! I wanna fight the strongest, then get even stronger! [punches the ground, creating a small crater] How about you? Why sail forever?
Monkey D. Luffy: [spinning his straw hat on one finger] Because the world’s huge. I gotta see it all before I die. Freedom’s the treasure—well, and the One Piece, but that’s a bonus.
Goku: [tilting his head] Freedom? You mean like flying wherever without shoes? [laughs] I did that before I had a spaceship!
Monkey D. Luffy: [grinning] Better! I don’t need spaceships. Just the sea. [gestures to the horizon] But hey, you ever get tired of fighting?
Goku: [pausing mid-bite] Tired? No! But sometimes… I miss my grandpa. [shrugs] When he died, I realized I’d never be the same kid again. But fighting’s what keeps me me, y’know?
Monkey D. Luffy: [quieter] I get it. My brother… he died fighting for me. [stares at his stretched arm] After that, I couldn’t stop moving. Like if I stand still, the sea’ll drag me back.
Goku: [nodding] So you’re looking for something… but also running?
Monkey D. Luffy: [snorting] Running? Pirates don’t run. We sail. Big difference.
Goku: [grinning again] Same thing! [pats his stomach] Hey, you hungry? I’ve got this awesome recipe for fire-breathing duck—
Monkey D. Luffy: [already drooling] Duck?! [interrupts] Let me show you real pirate food! Sanji makes this soup that—
Goku: [snort-laughing] Soup? I once ate a whole island’s worth of meat in ten minutes!
Monkey D. Luffy: [wide-eyed] Ten minutes?! Teach me how!
[They argue over meal sizes and fighting styles for hours, their voices echoing until the stars blur.]
Goku: [suddenly standing] Hey, wanna spar?
Monkey D. Luffy: [stretching his legs] Only if you promise not to fly!
Goku: [already charging a punch] No promises!
The ground explodes in a cloud of dust. Somewhere, a tree catches fire.
