When Pelé Met Cristiano Ronaldo: A Conversation Across Time

It’s a warm afternoon in São Paulo, 2023. The sun filters through the windows of a quiet, elegant lounge inside the Morumbi Stadium. The air carries the scent of leather footballs and history. A private exhibition celebrating the greatest players of all time has brought together icons from different generations. Among them, two stand apart — Pelé, the man who turned football into poetry, and Cristiano Ronaldo, the athlete who redefined what was possible through sheer will.

The room is mostly empty now, save for the two legends seated on a worn leather couch, a football resting between them like a shared memory.

Pelé: So, you're the one they call "CR7." I've seen your goals, you know. Even on that little box they call a phone now. You never stop scoring, do you?

Cristiano Ronaldo: [smiles] I try not to. The net is my best friend. And you, the "King" — they say you were magic with the ball. I watched some of your old footage. It's like you were dancing with it.

Pelé: Dancing? Maybe. But it wasn’t just me. We played as a team. The rhythm, the joy — that was what made it beautiful. When I was young, I used to play barefoot in the streets. The ball was made of rags, but it felt like gold.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I played with hunger too. In Madeira, I came from nothing. I trained harder than anyone. Still do. I believe in discipline. In the gym, in the mirror, in your mind — that’s where you win before the game starts.

Pelé: Yes, but you must also trust the moment. There were times when I didn’t know what my feet would do next — and that was the fun. Like when I chipped the ball over that defender in the 1970 World Cup. I didn’t plan it. It just came.

Cristiano Ronaldo: That’s beautiful, but I couldn’t imagine playing like that. I plan every movement. Every header, every sprint, every shot — I practice until my body knows it by heart.

Pelé: You’ve won so much. Five Ballon d'Ors, goals in every corner of Europe. But tell me, what gives you joy?

Cristiano Ronaldo: Joy? The roar of the crowd. The feeling when the ball hits the back of the net and the whole stadium rises. And the hunger — I still have it. I want more.

Pelé: I understand that hunger. But for me, it was the game itself. I used to cry when I couldn’t play. Even when I was sick, I dreamed of running with the ball. That love — it’s what made me want to share the game with the world.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I love the game too, but I see it as a battle. Every match, every season — you have to fight. You have to earn your place again and again.

Pelé: You're right to fight. But don’t forget to smile while you do it. The world changes so fast. But football — it stays the same. A boy, a ball, a dream.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Maybe that’s true. I’ve seen kids in Lisbon, in Manchester, in Madrid — all dreaming the same dream. I try to be an example. To show them that you can rise, no matter where you come from.

Pelé: That’s a beautiful thing. I’ve tried to do the same. I played for Brazil, but I also played for the children watching from the favelas. I wanted them to know that even if you start with nothing, you can shine.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I think we both understand that feeling. The weight of a nation’s hope. It’s heavy, but it’s also fuel.

Pelé: And what’s next for you, my friend? You’ve done it all. Do you ever think about stopping?

Cristiano Ronaldo: I’ll play as long as I can. As long as my legs hold up and my heart is in it. I want to be remembered not just for the goals, but for how I played — with heart, with fire.

Pelé: Then you’ll be remembered well. And when you do hang up your boots, you’ll find new ways to give back. Maybe you’ll coach. Maybe you’ll help build a school. Or maybe, like me, you’ll just keep telling the world how beautiful this game can be.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I hope I can do that. I hope I can leave a mark beyond the pitch.

Pelé: You already have. And I’m proud to sit beside you today — two players from different times, but with the same love.
