Who Is Arthur Dent?

1 min read

Arthur Dent is the protagonist of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, first broadcast as a BBC radio series in 1978. He is an ordinary Englishman who discovers that his house is about to be demolished for a bypass. Minutes later, the Earth itself is demolished for a hyperspace bypass. His friend Ford Prefect rescues him, and Arthur spends the rest of the series wandering the galaxy in his bathrobe.

What Is Arthur Dent Like?

Arthur is aggressively normal. He likes tea, dislikes Thursdays, and wants a quiet life. He is thrown into the most absurd situations the universe can produce and responds with bewildered British exasperation. Adams wrote Arthur as the reader's surrogate: the only sane person in an insane universe.

Why Is The Hitchhiker's Guide Important?

Adams' work is one of the most influential works of comic science fiction. It established that the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is 42, coined the Babel fish concept, and introduced the philosophy of Don't Panic. The series spans five novels, radio, television, film, and video games.

What Does Arthur Dent Represent?

Arthur represents the ordinary person caught in extraordinary circumstances who never asked for any of it. He is not brave, not clever, not chosen — he is simply present. His endurance through cosmic absurdity is its own quiet form of heroism.
