Who Is Deku From My Hero Academia?
Izuku Midoriya, known as Deku, is the protagonist of My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia), a manga and anime series created by Kohei Horikoshi. Born without a Quirk (superpower) in a world where 80% of the population has one, Midoriya inherits the power One For All from the retiring Symbol of Peace, All Might, and enrolls in UA High School to become a professional hero. The series has sold over 85 million copies.
What Is One For All?
One For All is a transferable Quirk that stockpiles power across generations, growing stronger with each successive holder. It was created from the combination of two Quirks: a power-stockpiling Quirk and a Quirk-transfer Quirk. All Might was the eighth holder; Midoriya is the ninth. The power grants extraordinary strength, speed, and durability, but Midoriya's body was not adapted to handle it — early use caused severe physical damage including broken bones and torn muscles. Over the series, he develops techniques to use partial percentages of the power safely.
Why Is Midoriya Called Deku?
The nickname Deku was originally given to Midoriya by his childhood rival Katsuki Bakugo as an insult, derived from a reading of the characters in his name that suggests useless or someone who can't do anything. Midoriya later reclaims the name after his classmate Ochaco Uraraka interprets it as meaning you can do it (from the Japanese dekiru). He adopts Deku as his hero name, transforming the insult into his identity.
What Is UA High School?
UA High School (Yuuei Koukou) is the top hero training academy in the My Hero Academia universe. Its hero course accepts only the most promising students, with an acceptance rate comparable to elite universities. The school trains students in combat, rescue operations, and hero ethics. Notable students include Midoriya, Bakugo, Todoroki, Uraraka, and Iida. The school is protected by a faculty of professional heroes including Eraserhead (Shota Aizawa) and the principal Nezu.
Does Deku Become the Number One Hero?
The series begins with adult Midoriya narrating: this is the story of how I became the greatest hero. The manga has concluded, and Midoriya's journey from quirkless outcast to the inheritor of the world's most powerful Quirk is complete. His story emphasizes that heroism is defined not by power but by the choice to act when others are in danger.
