Who Is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?

1 min read

Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Edward Hyde are characters from Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Jekyll is a respectable London physician who creates a potion that transforms him into Hyde, a smaller, younger, cruel man who represents Jekyll's suppressed desires. The story is one of the most influential works of psychological horror.

What Happens in the Story?

Jekyll discovers a formula that separates his good and evil natures into two physical forms. As Hyde, he indulges in acts of cruelty and violence. Over time, the transformations become harder to control — Hyde grows stronger while Jekyll weakens. Eventually, Jekyll can no longer return to his original form and takes his own life.

Why Is Jekyll and Hyde Important?

The story predated Freud and anticipated modern psychology's understanding of repression and the unconscious. It has been adapted hundreds of times and gave the English language a permanent metaphor for dual personality.

What Does the Story Mean?

Stevenson argued that every person contains both good and evil, and that attempting to separate them is more dangerous than accepting their coexistence. Hyde is not a separate entity — he is Jekyll, freed from conscience.
